Yes that did unfortunately happen more than just once.
We were a group of friends from elementary school, very close and each of us were on a platonic relationship only with each other, even with those of the opposite gender. There was no feeling of not belonging entirely to the group.
Then, one additional member was allowed in because he was the best friend of one of the males and from that moment on, the atmosphere became very toxic. That new member, aged 16 at that time had seen the girls as potential "candidates" for something more than just platonic relations.
The girls slowly started distancing themselves from that new guy and progressively, the group fell apart because of that new member that could not abide by the unspoken rules to keep it strictly platonic.
Yes, it is like throwing the wrong ingredient into a meal. It can ruin things.
I had to kick her to the curb
