He wants to leave his girlfriend for me...

and I feel uncomfortable with this for some reason. Until recently we had only been friends. But he recently let me know that he likes me and wondered if I would give him a chance if he didn't have a girlfriend. I guess it just makes me think that maybe if we dated and he got bored with me or we started arguing, he would leave me for somebody else. Does this seem like a valid conclusion?

Oh, I should mention that he wanted to go out with me over a year ago (before the current girlfriend) and I turned him down. I didn't know him then, but we have become friends within the last 6 months.

It wouldn't bother me that he would leave his girlfriend for me, it would bother me that he didn't leave his girlfriend when he realized that he didn't have strong feelings for her. If he's looking for a replacement for his current girlfriend right now, he should realize that the only reason he's with her is because he's looking for a warm body to fill the slot not because he loves her. To me that speaks volumes about his respect for people in general.

I would tell him no thank you, and see if he decides to be single anyway. If not, he's just using her until something better comes along, which makes him kind of a jerk to me.

You have a good reason to be uncomfortable. You should never go for a guy with a girlfriend. It is a lose/lose situation. If the guy stays with his girlfriend you lose, and if he leaves his girlfriend and goes for you you still lose. Because if a guy will leave his girlfriend for you, he will leave you for another girl. You don't want a guy like that. Girls... and guys for that matter, are not trading cards to be swapped around like they're nothing.

Yeah, that's how I feel about the situation. What's worse is that I feel like this is going to ruin our friendship, which I valued. What should I tell him? I don't want to be a jerk, because he is my friend, but I also don't want him to think this is ok.

I am not so strong as previous guys. A life is a complicate think, all of us are mistaken often, it is absolutely normal, and this guy also probably have mistaken when he left one girl and moved to another. However, it seems so that now he understood his mistake and want come back. I don't think that this is means he is a jerk or something like this. However, his new (old) girl should decided herself if she wants to be with him or not... Only she...
