Anonymous(30-35)+1 yLet me be honest, when I got my period for the first time I tried to hide it. I knew what it was (pretty sure that at 13/14 every girl knows what it is), but I HATED the though of having any sort of talk with my mom that involved my private parts. She obviously caught me.
So she went full berserk and acted like it was my birthday, cheered, clapped and hugged me. Awkward.
Then she spent the whole week reminding me to change my pad every two hours. Also very awkward.
So if this is her first, don't even try to ask, because she'll be awkward. I know that at 14, I would.
I was awkward about my period for YEARS. Honestly, I only started buying my own tampons at 17.
ANYWAY:
If I was you, I'd call a girl friend of hers, tell her that your sister looks sick but doesn't want to talk to you, so you thought she might enjoy the company.
Then, hopefully, your sister will tell her friend and her friend will help her or ask you for help.
If there's no way to contact a friend/someone she can talk to, just go into her room, the most casually way you can and say something like ' Look, if you're having your period I can go to the store for you. Oh, and by the way (something random here, like, "I'm doing the laundry, where's the soap?" or "I think I'm going to make myself some waffles, if you want some just tell me") ' - that way you can offer your help AND look like you don't care at all, so she will be a little less awkward.61 Reply- +1 y
That's a brilliant idea about saying something after you ask her, would be less awkward on both it you!

Anonymous(30-35)+1 yI agree with sef0181; get a box/bag and pretend it was your ex's. If you want to make it more convincing that you didn't go buy them just for her, you can open the top of the box/bag so it doesn't look perfectly new. Pads are probably a better idea than tampons, though, since with tampons girls have to worry about how they fit, inserting them properly, not leaking, and stuff like that. Go to Walmart, Meijer, or some other multi-purpose store rather than a drugstore like Walgreen's, because the drugstore charges much more for the same product. I'd recommend Always (brand) Maxi (size- it's the largest), because if the pads are too small or thin, she'll have to change them more often. You'll find them in the Personal Care section with the feminine products. You can always ask a store associate for help finding them.
Also, if she's stained some of her clothing, she'll probably need some way to get to clean clothes and underwear and not want you to know about it. Make sure her luggage or whatever her clothes are in is available nearby, where she can be as unobtrusive as possible getting them. This will probably help her feel less uncomfortable.
Have hot drinks available, since sometimes they soothe stomach cramps girls have. (Ice cream makes mine worse; for some people that isn't the case.) Also keep Tylenol (acetaminophen) available if she needs it.10 Reply

+1 yI know what she's going through the process is painful.
You could inform her you're going to the store. Go to the store and get her a tub of her favorite ice-cream, chocolates and some always pads - they are soft and comfortable and not too bulky because they are long. Then go a rental store and rent couple of her favorite movies. Then you can go home and watch them with her over a tub of ice-cream. Or you can leave her to watch them while eating ice-cream. Though watching the movies with her would give you some quality time with her and secretly she would be thrilled and appreciative, it will raise her mood too.
If you have some money you could book a day at the spa for her. So after she's finished her periods she can go and relax.
Also give her a 2 tablets of Paracetamol and a hot water bottle like the users below suggested. Hopefully she would be well soon. I know when I'm on my periods it makes me cranky and moody. So if she does get upset then its because of her hormones which are all over the place lol
Also invite her friends over. She'll be more comfortable talking to them about a topic she can't talk to you about.10 Reply
I would go to her and say that you're going to the store and ask if she needs anything, if she says no then that's that.
Every woman goes through it, they all know how to handle it, let her take care of herself, if she really needs something badly she'll ask you for it.03 Reply- +1 y
Not at 14. At that age, a lot of girls would try to get bad with wads of toilet paper shoved in their underwear instead of talking to their brother about it.
- +1 y
I remember those days... a girl might use toilet paper instead of talking to her mom or sister. It can be that level of embarrassment and secrecy.
+1 yJust casually bring it up in conversation, and then if she thinks that she is on her period, you should go out and buy her pads and tampons. so she can try them both and find out which one she likes

I would say just go buy a very tiny box of pads or tampons. Then I think I'd act like you were cleaning the bathroom, found your ex's and ask your sister if she wants them/will give them to someone who will use them because you obviously don't need them. If she says no just stash them somewhere in your apartment because I can guarantee one day in the future you will save the day for a female friend/girl friend/sister/mom/etc when there is an emergency.

+1 yTake her to Walmart and act like YOU want some privacy shopping. Give her $20, tell her to go shopping and buy whatever she wants, then meet back up with you in 20 minutes. If you act like you're doing it to get her out of your hair, she'll be able to discreetly buy what she needs with a glimmer of hope that you don't know what that is.

338 opinions shared on Family & Friends topic. Get her some pads, and just look after her. Don't flat out give them to you, just put them on her bed when she's not in the room and maybe a note like "hope this helps".
Don't get her tampons because some women get TSS, best let your mother help her with those things.
I know it's kind of horrible on you (responsibility and not really a conversation you want to have) but just try and be grown up and mature and talk to her if she comes to you. I got my first period when my mum wasn't there, my dad had to help me threw it. I knew a little but I was so at sea at what to do, when to change it.
All pads come with instructions, so let her figure that out, just try and be supportive :) Her tummy will probably be hurting, so maybe a hot water bottle!00 Reply- 316 opinions shared on Family & Friends topic.
+1 yI would go out and get her some pads, if she does not have any. Bring her something to eat, maybe get her watching TV or a movie to keep her mind off of it.
Get her some midol for cramps as well. I'm sure she knew this was going to happen one day. But it's hard when it's happening for the first time and your mom or another woman isn't there to help her.
Don't try and talk to her about it, she will probably be embarrassed. Just get her a few things and maybe have a friend of hers come over after.00 Reply
Anonymous(30-35)+1 yGo buy her pads. If this is the first time she has ever had it then she probably doesn't know what to do but she can't talk to you about it because you are her brother. Just put them on the back of the toilet or beside the sink so when she goes in there she will see them. You can also put a bottle of ibuprofen somewhere else in the bathroom so she will see it. Not next to each other. She most likely doesn't want you to know about it that is why she's not talking to you. (I know I didn't want my brother to know). I would suggest not getting her goodies or doing anything you wouldn't normally do, she may get embarrassed knowing that you know about it. Maybe take her to her favorite fast food restaurant for take out or see if she wants to get ice cream one night, but don't go and pick up all kinds of sweets and things to give to her she will know something is up

Anonymous(45 Plus)+1 yWell, no need to call the fire department or animal rescue, just go get her whatever brand of pads she needs...
Why does she need to talk to anyone about it? Is it her first period? Just knock on the door and ask
(1) Are you still alive?
(2) I have a nice glass of water (or juice) for you, can you please eat something? (Hydration is important)
(3) What pads do you need?
(You might look in your parent's room/bathroom to see if you MOM has any pads around the house. If not, pharmacy Kotex/Always long, ultra thin are the best choices for a girl her age. Nothing...bulky.)12 Reply- +1 y
Did you miss the part where she's staying with him in his college town and that she and their parents live in an entirely different state?
Opinion Owner+1 ySo obnoxious. I don't know the distance from parent's home to college town. Left my crystal ball in my other pocket book...
+1 yBuy her pads and chocolate and tell her that it's okay. She's probably just upset because she feels uncomfortable going to you about that kind of thing. It's understandable. If you let her know that it's perfectly normal and that you're not grossed out she will probably calm down. Your period doesn't change your whole personality.

Anonymous(25-29)+1 yi guess you should tell a close female friend of urs and tell her to visit you and talk to your sister and let her try to stay with your sister and you go somewhere and leave them alone and let your friend act like " oh I see some blood , you got your period ! I won't let anybody knows , I have a pad .. "let her grapes it out of her bag and give it to your sis " finally let your friend buy some and give them to your sis and ask her to act like she sends your sis regularly secret bags and ask you to give her them and act like you dnt know what is inside .. I guess your sis won't be shy of another girl .. it would be better than her bro to do this and ofcourse dnt let her know that you know :P

+1 yDon't even ask her... It will probably be too awkward. Just go out and get her some pads and some pain killers and put them in her room, she'll be okay. If you are not very sure which pads to get, simply ask a worker at the store and they would not mind assisting you. I actually think that is pretty sweet of you to be concerned for her, not many guys would do this.

+1 yYeah...she probably doesn't want to talk about it but,go to your local pharmacy and buy her some sanitary napkins.I say you should buy pads instead of tampons because tampons can be confusing and she might need to speak to a female about insertion. So,buying her some pads would be the best bet. Also, while at the pharmacy maybe you can speak to a pharmacists or just a female about how to approach the situation. But good luck.

You're awesome! :)
shes 14 years old.
wouldnt she think to bring something with her. just because she spotted a bit has blood doesn't mean she didn't bring anything.
also she could just stuff to into her pants and go buy some pads. she's probably in her room because she ha cramps. not because she has nothing to use fr her period.
anywasy just get some and put them in her room.you don't have to talk about it. just leave them for her.
just keep it simple.00 ReplyI would go to the store and tell a female sales clerk what the situation is. She should be able to help you pick out the appropriate feminine products...then I would take them home and place them in the bathroom so she can visibly see them. If the thought of bringing it up to her freaks you out, then write her a quite note explaining that everything will be okay, etc.
00 ReplyWhat a nice brother you are. I think you should go buy pads and/or tampons, and pretend you found it in the bathroom, and then you can put them somewhere your sister can see them. Ask why she is always be herself, ask if something is wrong, or if she is sad, ask her if she need anything or if you can do anything for her. Let her know that she always can come to you. Maybe make her breakfast in bed with a cute note or something :)

+1 yI liked the idea someone else had about going to the store and letting her secretly get what she needs on her own.
But, other than that just be real about. Ask if she's having her period (In a nice way) and tell her it's okay and you understand. Then get her some pads (NOT tampons).
It wasn't awkward for me when I started. I didn't start till I was 14 so I was thrilled when it happened, cause most of my friends had already started by 12 or so.Until then I always thought something might be wrong with me.
Just don't treat the situation like it's awkward. Act cool and understanding and maybe she won't feel awkward about it either.00 ReplyI have an older brother, but for him to buy me pads on my period would be embarrassing, but if I run out of some I would be really gratefull of him buying me one. (you can put the pads somewhere she can find, on the toilet or her rooms. and do not tease/mentioning her about it.) (:
Give her warm water because it will sooth the pain.. (I think that's why she is in bed all day), chocolate and ice cream (or anything she likes) in case she's in bad mood. When I was on my period, I would be very lazy and it's not very comfortable to go on a walk so I would rather eating and reading all day.
you see her blood.. oh god, she would be very embarrassed and worried if she knew you see that thing. Don't act weird (like suddenly, you becomes super nice..) just be yourself and act like nothing happened. it would put her at ease.
oh and the best to wait for her to talk to you about it if she wants to! You're an awesome brother! :D00 Reply
+1 yIf you talk to her about it, she'll be terribly embarrassed. You should just get her some pads, Midol for any cramps, and leave them somewhere she can easily find them. Buy her a few of her favorite things like food she likes, magazines, or even movie she can watch so she can temporarily forget about her period and feel a bit better. I know my first one was unpleasant, so hers might be as well.
Also, I admire your concern for your sister. You must be a wonderful brother. :)00 Reply
Anonymous(30-35)+1 yfor the longest time I wouldn't tell my mom I had my period so I just used a bunch of folded up toliet paper when it happened... I still do this if I'm too lazy to buy pads or if its a light day... I think you should ask her if she needs anything at the store and if she doesn't then let it go, just be nice to her and maybe make her some food she likes... I know for me talking about it with my brother would be really awkward.. but I guess it depends on your relationship.
00 ReplyGo buy her some pads or Tampons..If she had blood on her pants then she needs them...And you might want to buy her some Midol or some pain pills also. And like the other girls said, Every girl loves Icecream and Chocolates ;) Lol
10 Reply609 opinions shared on Family & Friends topic. Just go buy a small pack of pads, on the off chance she didn't bring any herself. If she seems embarrassed, let her know that it's a normal thing and not something to be ashamed of, and that she can talk to you if she needs it.
