Is it OK to give flowers for a very close friends birthday?

Hi there,

So one of my closest friends (a girl) is having her birthday soon, and I'm terrible with presents, I never know what to get people. She's been really great to me these last few months, helping me get through some hard times and I really want to let her know how much I appreciate it, and well who doesn't like a good flower?

Now just to make this clear - there are NO romantic feelings between us, these flowers would be completely friendship based. My question is, is it too weird? What should I stay away from choice wise? I hear yellow means friendship, so I was thinking some yellow / white roses?

you give flowers if you want to be romantic, or if you want to make the girl feel good about herself because she has never gotten flowers from a guy in a romantic way before and usually a parent or girl best friend would do that.

i did that for my girl best friend on Valentine's day (actually I bought her a chocolate heart...same thing). Also you give flowers if you are congradulating someone at a graduation or congradulating someone who just performed in a very important stage show (like if she was a theatre actress, a dancer, just played in a band/orchestra)

Just get her a birthday card and something silly and small from a gift shop, like a key chain that lights up and makes noise. Get her a snow globe, some type of nic-nac that she can go home and sit it on her dresser or night stand.



Do they have a Spencers Gift shop where you live? you can find all sorts of key chains, mugs, even a silly t-shirt or hat would be a decent enough gift to give her

Do they have a Bed Bath And Beyond store where you live? you can find all sorts of do-dads, whatnots and trinkets in that store meant just for sittting on your dresser.

vintage stores have interesting gifts as well

just do not buy her any jewelry, flowers, do not buy her any clothing that you can only find in a womens clothing store (like scarves, sweaters, sun hats, dresses, blouses, jeans) even boyfriends don't do that. A husband might buy feminine clothing for his wife only if it is big designer name brand as a Christmas gift.

just getting her a card is good enough for a guy friend who has no romantic interest in her. If you find yourself thinking really hard about a gift, then that means you like her.

I would say not to give flowers unless your intentions are romantic... every girl knows that if a guy sends her flowers (who's not a relative), it's because he likes her! Stick to sometimes else that's thoughtful but not necessarily romantic. Sending flowers will probably just confuse her, if she knows you only see her as a friend.

P.S. A close friend sent me flowers for my birthday... he was my boyfriend a few months later ;)

No, it's not weird at all! It's a very sweet idea, and you could even put a little card in there that tells her the exact same thing you just told us; that she's really helped you out a lot these past few months. I don't think you should spend too much thought on what flower/s to get. Just go to a flower shop and get a flower/a small bouquet that reminds you of her. :)

I got a female friend a single white rose with something like baby's breath around it, and she was so moved she cried. It was really cheap, but still the most powerful gift I ever gave. I don't think she had ever gotten flowers before. That was kinda weird to see her cry, but she was happy so it all worked out. She didn't think I was into her or anything so things weren't awkward afterwards.

I went with a white rose because I figured white being all about purity would be less likely to be seen as anything other than friendship. I wanted to stay away from red for obvious reasons. I don't know if the color would matter to a girl or not, but I wanted to play it safe.

Good idea.. Just make sure they aren't too "romantic"... Yellow is the color of friendship... Red is for romance... A nice display in a mug is always cute and you can give her a friendship themed mug.. Usually I will ask the florist what is cool... You get nicer fresher flowers if you do... I spent a lot of time dating so I learned a lot! I know she will love them... Also... Send them to her work! Women love to get flowers in front of other women even if it's from a friend. Don't ask me why they just do! =)

I love getting flowers from my friends on my birthday! It makes me smile lots :3 But then I love flowers, so they all know I would be extremely happy to receive them.

I think it will be fine if you give your friend flowers, because of the fact that there are 'NO' romantic feelings between you, she herself will know your giving them to her as a friend.

But you have to be real good friends to give it or been in a relationship with her. Also, you can give flowers and choco together with a friend? than it doesn't seem like you want something more... if she is optimistic she has to love the friend flowers!

I would feel a little awkward giving bouquet of flowers. I would rather give something like anless flowery basket or a nice little plant in a cute pot. Other than that, a good presentable pack or box of chocolates could be good. Just "flowers" throws some otger connotation in my mind.

I say go for it, as long as you're 100% sure she knows there's no romantic connection between you at all. You can get her some white roses and a playful card just to make it more clear that you're nothing but friends, Hope I helped :)

I'd go with a different flower than roses. Something more playful like daisies or tulips. Or even better don't get a bouquet, buy a potted flower that will last :)

Sending flowers is a sweet gesture, go ahead and do it. Just make sure that it's not red roses though and write a non-romantic message on the card. So she won't put malice on it :)

Roses are for romantic gestures. Go with another pretty flower. Hell, go with a potted live flower, that way she'll have it for as long as she can keep it alive. :-)

If she is a flower person, I'd say that's fine.

If she's one of those people who doesn't really care for flowers, I'd go with a giftcard or something. Some people don't like flowers, just because.
