Why do people keep asking me about when I am going to get a girlfriend?

I am 19 and people keep on asking me about when I am going to get a girlfriend. I've been used to most of my family asking me that for the past 5 years but even my grandma has weighed in and started asking me too which is odd because she's never asked before.
When I got back from my first semester at University a lot of people from school were asking me if I was seeing anyone and when I was going to get a girlfriend.
A friend of mine at University has now asked me the same question quite a few times over the past month too, I don't get why she has now suddenly taken an interest.

Can anyone shed any light on why people are asking this and what can I say in response? I don't know when I am going to get a girlfriend, it's not like I have a crystal ball or anything!

I'm 23 and never had a girlfriend. I went through the same experience. Parents and grandparents telling me to get a girlfriend. Even my step grandmother in Russia asked my mom if I found a girlfriend. Ugh. What if I don't want one? What if I'm not ready? What if I got other more important things I wanna get done first? Same applies to you. It looks like neither of our family's see that or think about that.
I guess people just expect teens at 18 and 19 to have or have had girlfriends. Society these days maybe.

I never had one, and everyone ask me when I'm getting one. But every time I ask a girl out she says no because I'm short.

Maybe they think you are a good catch. That is the major reason why I would assume that somebody had a girlfriend or want to know if they had one. At the age of 19, being single is quite common so I think it is because they believe you are a good catch.

I hate when people ask that question all I say is I date on the DL you guys will meet her or him when you least expect it. Just say don't worry about my dating life I have no problem in that area. Just to make them shut up trust me it works.

People always ask that just because if they themselves are in a relationship, they think everybody should be dating someone and there's something wrong with being single. If you're happy don't worry about it.
