Designer Brands Are a Waste of $$$

1. Designer dress = $1000, Walmart t-shirt = $5, = made in China

I have seen so many designer brands such as Michael Kors, all being made in China. China has poor quality control as compared to many other countries. It is cheap to manufacture there, while selling a purse for $600 in the states. If i'm paying tons of money I want quality that is impeccable, and I would trust an Italian craftsman over an Asian any day.

2. Celebrity endorsement

Celebrities endorse because they get paid. Buying a new paid of $200 leggings isn't going to give you a bum like Kim K's... while they are getting paid to make you spend, you're just wasting your money.

3. Status

If you wear expensive clothes, then you must be successful and make tons of money? But don't you think that there are better ways to invest your money? Like in a savings account so you could go on a vacation or retire early?

4. Break the bank

Spend $50 on a shirt, $200 on shoes, $700 on a purse- and before you know it you're in debt or paying off your credit card with the hard money that you've earned. Is it worth it?

5. Quality vs Quantity

I have no issues with great quality instead of quantity, but like we addressed in point 1- if it is made in China, i would rather have 5 shirts than 1.

I have never owned designer anything, and honestly, I don't care to. I watched a co-worker save up for nearly 2 years to buy some designer purse that cost nearly half of her yearly salary. Then she spent the time after the purchase worrying about it being stolen all the time. I just can't waste my money/time like that. Something that expensive needs to be an investment in either my future, like my education, or something that is useful like a car or house. Some people are so wrapped up in the image of it all. I have to have it, or I won't be cool, or have status like you mentioned, but looking good, looking put together, looking rich isn't just about how much money you can spend. I mean seriously, we have whole entire shows dedicated to celebrities who look totally stupid in their "designer" clothes, so clearly money can't save you from looking ridiculous.

the price that makes designer clothes is not the quality, its the designer. cheaper shops just copy the designer clothes and change a little bit. the reason why people buy from designer is because they get is as first. day one products always cost (a lot) more. also they have a much better service. if you have the money it definitly gives you some benefits over the "mass shops".

It really all depends though. Some designer brands are worth it when you're going for important things like an interview and anything business wise or occupation-wise. I say to find one or two brands at a reasonable price and have that, and take good care of it. Not wear it like it's going out of style. And use your other accessories for everyday things. I would be extremely careful where you purchase your items from, especially from China. Too many fraudulent items or items made from illegal child labor. Though you can practically get that from anywhere without knowing it. I agree overall for the myTake written. But I say, again, it depends on the person and the reason why they're going for Designer brands. I don't care for designer anyway. But like my late mother had said which is pretty much true, it's always good to have at least 1 or 2 designer something because you have to be able to sell and present yourself in certain situations. But yeah, designer brands, especially when shopping at Macy's is expensive!

The designer clothes the sell off the rack for places like Target or even Nordstrom and Bloomingdale's are of a lower quality than the ones they sell at their flagship stores. That's what I have noticed at least. Between these two there is marked difference in quality of fabric and stitching.

If it's something I can see myself wearing regularly, I'd consider the splurge. But as it is, I don't. Because good fashion isn't about branding. It's about fit, durability, comfort, and style.

My wife has a lot of designer clothes and shoes she has found at resale shops. The fabric is of high quality, and lasts through many washings. They are made with careful attention to detail so they fit better and look better. Designer shoes are finished all over, while inexpensive shoes leave many edges raw.

We have found that it is much cheaper to buy used designer clothes than new from department stores.

With the highest end products products you are always paying for the brand more than anything.

It's usually better to go with second or third tier products where the "build quality" is still good but you aren't paying for the brand.

Not good to go too cheap though or stuff just falls apart too quickly (e. g. within a year or less) and then buying multiple replacements ends up costing more.

And yes you figured certain brands like MK are all badge and no quality. Try LV for leather products...

I saw a shirt once at Old Navy that was the exact same shirt I was wearing but mine had a more generic brand logo on it. The design and fabric was the exact same. The only difference at all was the brand name sewn on and it was 10 bucks more.
