Things NOT To Wear In Europe

IF you want to fit in - and not be a potential target for muggers...or someone else with malicious intentions.

This MyTake has more to do with your safety than any not so relevant fashion faux pas you might commit...

Disclaimer: Of course, some people are going to wear these in an odd way...but that's going to be 0.3% chance...and 0.2% of those are tourists...

1. Baseball caps:

NO ONE wears baseball caps in Europe...and you will 100% become a target with this on your head.

2. Athletic wear casually:

again - NO ONE wears athletic wear casually...to go out to coffee or wherever... Athletic wear is reserved for the gym, or any athletic activity in or outside of the house... If you're not running - don't do it! xD

3. Hoodie and shorts:

I've never seen anyone wear this - except tourists. They usually pair it with flip flops (another not so popular shoe choice unless you're going to the beach)...

4. Swimsuit/bikini as actual clothing:

This one is illegal actually (not sure if in all countries, but most) - but many tourists still do it and then are surprised when they get a ticket to pay at the police station... You can't wear a bikini top as a shirt, or walk around without a shirt...

There are plenty more, but these ones are a huge giveaway...not to mention the last one being illegal!

So take care of yourselves, educate before going out there... So you'd have much more fun than problems!

... where? These are all fine? The swimsuit one only if you were at the beach/beach town. Other than that... all those happen in Europe. I'm half English, half Dutch and have seen ALL these things while doing all my travelling through Europe.

But I don't believe those specific styles are something that is only in the US. Sure it's not all people wearing caps or bras as clothing, but still it's not an unusual sight, especially in certain contexts.

1. Caps - there are people that wear caps indoors in a big company that I work for. It's worn especially in the summer and specialists (dermatologists and health care providers) advise to wear one in order to protect from scorching heat waves we have recently.

2. Hoodies and shorts, if the weather is colder, maybe like the end of the summer or a colder day at the sea-side. People usually cover upper body first.

3. Swimsuit/bikini as actual clothing. If it's a sea-side city or at a festival, it is everywhere.

4. Athletic wear casually. As in leggings? Had a colleague wearing leggings. Would smack her all day long.

Many wear from their football clubs they're supporting like Man United, Arsenal, Barca etc.. Many are just Nike or Adidas

I'm European and I wear shorts paired with a hoody sometimes during spring or fall. I admit it's not the most fashionable thing to do but it feels great :-). As for bikinis: I don't believe they are illegal in many Western European countries. In the entire German-speaking area (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein), it's considered pretty unproblematic to be nude in public. More or less the same is true for Northern Europe. As far as I know, Sweden is also very tolerant towards nudity (or semi-nudity) in public). Spain doesn't have any specific laws concerning public nudity either, with the exception of the tourist center Barcelona. So, while people might give you weird stares, I very much doubt you will get in trouble for wearing a bikini.

As for the baseball caps and the athletic casual wear... I don't think they put you in danger but they do look absolutely horrible and unstylish.

1. Baseball caps are often worn just not to do with baseball as baseball doesn't exist.

3. I often see women wear this combination when it gets nippy in the summer evenings or if it's raining and it's too warm for a coat.

In my country it's true no one would wear a bikini top in a big city or walk around shirtless - shops would refuse you service too.

Pairing shorts, hoodies and flip flops just look uncool in my opinion, but you could still probably find the odd soul who wears that. Maybe tourists, yeah.

1 and 2 are quite common.
Actually I guess Europe is quite diverse, even if people keep on forgetting that. There's still a huge difference of cultures between southern, northern, western and eastern Europe.

I'm not European and have not yet traveled to Europe :) but most of the youtubers I watch are European or living in Europe. They love their trainers, sweat shirts, and even sweat pants. Athletic leisure clothing is quite popular all over the world now, North America, Asian, and even Europe :) of course things are still catching on, but I'm sure in large cities-it is quite common to see people dressed to the 9s and also people in chill athletic clothing ex) Nike, Adidas

I live in London & quite a lot of people wear caps when it's sunny out? People wear athletic clothing to run errands/study etc but I agree they're generally not worn in social situations.
One thing I've noticed where I am in London, is that people aren't big fans of logos i. e. I atop with the 'PINK' logo on it would get some dirty looks going down the street.
But to be honest Europe doesn't have a particularly unique style...

4. Its the only means of going in public places when its 26 degree's with 70% humidity and you will see everyone do that even elders.
1. Seen plenty, people don't find anything from them.
3. That one is just weird indeed, way to hot for hoodies or way to cold for shorts.

It's true that people don't usually wear Bikinis or swimsuits as actual clothing, but everything else is pretty normal. This is especially true for baseball hats! Eveyone wears them.
I, myself, have them in different colors and I cannot take them off lol

I used to work for the Defense Department, and we would be told that if traveling to another country, don't arouse suspicions and don't wear anything that looks 'American'.

I also heard that Europeans can always spot American tourists, because they're always wearing sneakers.

Um... I think 'dont wear an EU flag' is a good one. Cos what the hell is 'Europe' anyway? We're talking 10s of different countries here, in different climatic zones, with distinct cultures. Still, not often do I see hoodies and shorts this side of the Atlantic. That ones a puzzle!

Uuuh I live in Europe and I wear flip flops during the entire summer season, bikini tops are tops so I wear them instead of tshirts sometimes (and so do a hell of a lot of people), you can't imagine how many people go around wearing athletic wear to go do whatever.

I agree with some of these but not all. Baseball caps ARE worn quite a lot actually usually just by teenagers and young adults. But yes sweatpants or so are not really seen. I wear hoodies a lot but usually in summer I just wear a T-shirt so I don't really combine hoodies and shorts a lot but that's only because of the temperature mostly ^^

Also I do wear my swimsuit when I'm going to play beachvolleyball because I don't wanna change and deal with extra clothes etc. So that happens as well ^^

Yes, people wear baseball caps in Britain and I suppose somewhat in other countries. But Americans have this way about them to wear the baseball cap isn’t going to be the only indicator they are a problem.

Shoes are usually the more important bit though. No running shoes there are other comfortable options, jackets are a problem. Wearing their university gear... men wearing shorts in Paris is usually a problem.

Most Americans don’t care though. They aren’t their to try and fit in or even speak the language. Americans are God awful tourists and need to do better.

This goes for Americans travelling to other US cities. I’ve had to pull people aside in Paris that I don’t know to ask them to try and do better. Sometimes it helps, sometimes they are like fuck them they hate us anyways... to which a waitress responded then why are you here.

1 2 and 3 are all painfully not true. People wear caps, activewear and a hoodie/shorts combination all the time. The swimwear thing depends more on where you are.

I agree with all of this, except for hoodiees that we wear, not as frequently nor as saggy as Northern Americans, but we wear them.

Nobody will ever be an asshole with you just because you wear any of the things above (except for the athletic stuff, that's just weird), but it will target you as a tourist, hence, target you as a plausible pick-pocketing target.
