What should I wear in Europe?

I have never been outside the US or Canada. I am going to visit The UK and The Netherlands. As an American, I have heard that people dress more formally in Europe. Is this true? Is there some outfits that I should leave home, and others that I should take or invest in to take? I particularly would like to hear from those who have been in both North America and Europe. Thanks.

I don't think you need to worry much. Fashion changes from country to country, you will see that in France or Italy for example people will be more stylish/classy, it's just part of the culture.

Doubt the UK will differ much from the US, Netherlands maybe a tiny bit better then the UK but still just wear whatever you feel comfortable with

I don't know what you consider formal, but you can wear jeans and tshirt, or even sweatpants.

Unless you go to a fancy restaurant, but i guess you would wear fancy stuff in the us as well.
