7 Modern Trends I Don't Understand

Anonymous

Lately, I've seen a ton of Instagram videos and photos circulating the web of women in high end, probably very expensive salons, and even some men as well, getting things done to them of which I just don't understand. Even many of the people around me are trying these things!

1. Ombre Hair

To me, ombre hair (more specifically the kind with dark brown roots that fades to either ashy blonde, caramel brown, or silver) just looks like you haven't dyed your hair in months and are in desperate need of a re-dye. The light tips can also look like really bad split ends (and sometimes are, because bleach can be very hard on your hair, especially the ends), and the dark roots sometimes give the illusion of less volume and a flatter look on top, which I don't find flattering to anyone. It honestly baffles me how many women spend hundreds of dollars on this look when growing out an old bleach job gives the same look.

2. Messy Waves/Beach Waves

To me, this just kind of looks like a "just got out of bed" look, especially on shoulder length and above styles, and I see almost EVERYONE wearing it these days. Sometimes it can look more like sloppily done curls that are beginning to fall out as well, and this style looks especially messy and unflattering when accompanied with the A-line and blunt clipper haircuts I mention below. This is another thing I can't fathom spending a lot of money on when it looks like so little effort was put into it.

3. A-Line Bob Haircuts

I haven't been a fan of these haircuts since they first took off around 10ish years ago. Some of them look pretty from the front, but I just don't care for the really short in the back look. It kind of looks like you just chopped off your ponytail. It looks much worse with the loose wave look.

4. Blunt, Straight Across Clipper Cuts

I've noticed a ton of videos of girls getting their hair cut in a blunt, straight across line with clippers, then maybe have a couple of layers or texture added (but not nearly enough to eliminate the super blocky look the clippers gave), then of course, have it styled in the loose waves style, which looks a little awkward with that haircut to me. Waves with super blunt edges just have kind of a messy and unfinished look to them to me. I will say that they must be pretty brave though, because I would never in a million years let a hairdresser near my hair with clippers!

5. The Huge Emphasis on Eyebrows

Ever since the eyebrow thing became a huge deal, I've always thought it was a little odd to want your eyebrows to be the focal point of your face. I also don't get the big, blocky kind (sorry, but they look like men's eyebrows to me) or the drawn on or perfectly refined edges look. They just look super fake and unnatural. I'm not saying to run around with bushy, untamed eyebrows, but there's a way to shape them more naturally without them looking like they were drawn or painted on.

6. Men's Haircuts That Are Long on Top and Shaved on the Sides

When I say shaved, I mean completely skin bald. I guess I just don't get the appeal of a messy mop on top with bald sides and back.

7. Tons and Tons of Makeup

When I watch makeup tutorials these days, it seems like these girls put on layers upon layers of makeup, to the point that their face is a different color from the rest of their skin and looks like it's made of plastic. The fake eyelashes are usually way overdone as well, and also the eyebrows that I already mentioned. The contouring is getting crazy as well. This photographs pretty decently, but looks almost scary in real life.

What are your thoughts on these things?
