10 Best TV Wedding Gowns of the 2000s+

One of the high points and most watched episodes of a tv series is when the, will they, won't they couple finally ties the knot...or at least features a wedding of sorts on the show. Like a real wedding, "the dress" is one of the most eagerly anticipated moments for fans to see. In typical fashion, usually the tv dress will trend or inspire a lot of upcoming bridal fashion. Unfortunately most tv grooms rarely wear anything dramatic to warrant a list of their own. Sorry guys! So here is my list of the best wedding gowns of the 2000s+ in my opinion in no particular order. I've made sure to include a video because beautiful gowns really need to be shown moving in all their glory.

1. Gossip Girl: Blair and Chuck: Series Finale

This was not Blair's first wedding on the show, but she finally got around to marrying Chuck in dramatic fashion in a non conventional light blue Elie Saab Dress. The costume designer Eric Daman said that the dress “needed to feel like old world glamour meets contemporary high fashion.” Given the shows emphasis on high fashion, this met the requirements of the character and because Blair marries Chuck, who himself had always been an unconventional choice for her, the dress made perfect sense in the series finale.

2. This is Us: Kate and Toby: S02 E18

I am a firm believer having worked in fashion for a while, in fashion for all. Most tv shows do not feature plus size brides in wedding episodes typically because the main characters don't tend to be plus sized. What I loved about this wedding dress is that even in the real world, designers tend to just throw tent dresses on plus size brides with no detail, no glitz, no glamour, and it rarely makes a bride feel special, but This is Us, really paid attention to detail, which is something a lot of women responded to when they saw Kate in her dress.

3. Schitts Creek: Alexis...and David?: S06 EP14

In true clueless Alexis fashion, she orders a slinky 30s inspired white satin wedding dress for her brother's wedding. Much to his horror, David remarks to his sister that people are going to think they are marrying each other (and they do!) as she walks him down the aisle to marry his husband. The dress is simple and elegant (and came with a net thing that Alexis hated...aka...a veil, that she didn't realize, was a veil) but this checks. The dress is timeless and simple.

4. Downton Abbey: Mary and Matthew: S03 EP01

Mary seemed like she would never tie the knot given her snobbish tendencies, but when she finally did, the dress did not disappoint. Coming down the stairs in a slow reveal showing off a long “vintage veil and diamond tiara from U.K. jeweler Bentley & Skinner, which rang-in at a whopping $200,000," the pattern correct 1930s long sleeve dress with dropped waist was a sight to behold, especially since her father and Carson, who had been like a second father to her, were both awaiting her entrance at the bottom of the stairs, in sheer awe at how beautiful she looked.

5. Scandal: Oliva and Fritz: 100th Episode

Bit of an odd one because Olivia marries Fritz in an alternate universe of what could have been because getting these two together was always just all sorts of complicated in true Scandal fashion. Costume designer Lyn Paolo said, "the final choice was [Anne Barge] the “Berkeley” ball gown, made of Kalika silk and featuring a chiffon bodice and off-the-shoulder cap sleeves. “Berkeley' is one of my most special gowns. It is both timeless and chic, perfect for a modern, classic bride,” said the designer." The dress was befitting a society bride, but not over the top which was never Oliva's thing in her own fashion---always clean lines, simple, architectural.

6. Outlander: Claire and Jaime: S01 EP07

In a pinch, when you need a whole wedding dress for a time traveling bride, you find one left behind as payment for service rendered by a gentleman in the local brothel. Yep, that was the origin of Claire's wedding dress, but in reality, the costume designer and her team spent hundreds of hours constructing the dress using period specific sewing techniques. Costume Designer Terry Dresbach said she "knew the dress had to look good in candlelight, appear modern enough for a modern audience, and suit Claire Fraser’s sensible character."

7. Reign: Mary and Francis: S01 EP13

This was by no means an accurate depiction of a wedding dress of the time period in any way, shape, or form. The costume designer for the show said the fashion was often comprised of modern pieces as opposed to realistic ones to appeal to it's very young audience who would be less concerned with pesky things like oh, I don't know, historical accuracy. The wedding dress was no exception being the gorgeous long sleeve lace Catherine gown by Monique Lhuillier, from the Spring 2012 Platinum Collection. Hello, they didn't even try, but nonetheless, the dress is stunning, which is the costume designers point taken.

8. The Empress: Sisi and Franz: S01 EP03

There is really only one word to describe this dress, and that is breathtaking. In the episode we see the structure underneath being put on Sisi that is required to hold up this dramatic full dress "which was crafted by two seamstresses in Vienna over the course of two weeks...it contained multiple feet in diameters, hundreds of layers of delicate fabric, pearls and sequins." Many shows and movies have taken artistic license with Sisi's dress because in reality, there is only one surviving piece of Sisi's real dress, part of the train, because Sisi and Franz did not allow any reporters into their wedding. With the help of a historian, fabric printer, and one sketch made years after the wedding that is thought to be of the real dress, a recent replica was made of what is thought to be the closest depiction of the real dress.
