Just show him the dress while you aren't wearing it then. Not like he cares what the dress looks like. He cares what it looks like on you, so you ain't gonna be spoiling anything.

it is his tie or bow tie that he'll have to cordinate so just tell him the exact colour he needs that is essentially all you need to do

No let it stay a surprise and it will make a cute picture. Just tell him what color he needs to get so you can coordinate or just go shopping with him.
