Girls, what is the secret behind making a nice looking hair braid?

Some girls look gorgeous with a hair braid (like on the picture below), though sometimes you see braids which are a turn off.
They're too dominating, irregularly shaped or just don't fit the girl...

Is there a secret behind making a good braid, or is it more a question of "if the look suits you" rather than technique?

There's different types of braids is a common answer but the secret is that there are two different types of girls. Girls who look mature and girls who look cute and child-like over sexy. The girls with more sexy/mature faces look better with low ponytails, braids with one tail, complicated hairstyles, low buns. While the cute, younger-looking faces look better with high ponytails, pigtails, twin braids, high buns, and more simpler designs.

Think about it and think back to all the braided hairstyles you've seen on women that you didn't like, most likely they didn't suit the person's face.

It depends on the braid but the trick is to start of with a equal amount for three strands and to add a little more whilst weaving the plait together.

The secret is all in the tension. Keep the same tension all the way through and depending on the style of the plat, a tight or more relaxed hand is needed. It also helps to divide the hair equally and keep the hairs from crossing between the strips of hair.
I also find that the placement of the plats is very important. Everybody suits a different plat and nobody will suit all of them.

That's interesting, and it could also explain how you get these irregular, not-at-all good looking braids... while others look splendid.

its a huge secret so don't tell anybody, okey?
So you need a hair from the person, holy water (vodka would do too) and a pinch of salt, then you start dancing around the person and you get it

You need to have almost straight hair to big waves only hair for larger relaxed braids without hair layers as the smaller strands will come off the sides making it messy.
Having highlights or different shades in the hair also makes it much better than one color.

The technique can be learned with practice which the easiest part

depends on the skill of the braider, the style (some find a fish tail pretty, whereas I think they're ugly), and the hair (is it dry or moisturized)

Thick hair and good technique. It also helps if someone else has done the braid, because they see everything.
