What he has now is what I call a beard, indeed. The other option is no facial hair. Longer beard definitely won't look good in my opinion.

A beard, regardless of how many days old looks unkempt and not very attractive.
It does not entice girls to kiss them knowing that they might find remnants of the past few meals.
