If someone you know gets a tattoo and it's either poor quality or just bad for any other reason - do you voice your concerns? With most people I would just say nothing but with friends I feel bad both if I lie and if I tell my honest opinion cause I don't want to make them feel bad if it's already done but also want them to know what impression it leaves. Like when a friend of mine got a tattoo saying "der sklave" in german thinking it means hostage (in her head like a hostage to rock'n roll lifestyle or smth) when it really just means "a male slave".
No, for one who made me the arbiter of what's good and what's bad? I'll still try to be honest with them. For instance one of the guys i used to play poker with was a LOTR fan. And he got a tattoo of the Elvish writing on the rings tattooed around his bicep. I told him it's not that i don't like it but it is kind of dated. Another friend i have claims many religions, most notably Christianity, and Buddhism. And he wanted to get a tattoo that represented that. So jokingly i told him you could get "No religion has a monopoly on salvation". And he actually did it. But my favorite story is one told by Tom Arnold. If you get a tattoo in another language or symbols, know what they mean before you get it done. He said he was going through a time after his divorce where he felt he grew with the support of his friends. He said when you're married all your energy goes to your partner so when he didn't have that anymore it got re directed to his friends as they helped him through a tough time and so afterwards he felt connected to his fellow man and he wanted a tattoo that showed love to theirs struggles. And so he got some chinese lettering and the tatto artist who only listened to what he said chose what the tattoo would be based on Tom's description. So he said later he was doing a movie with Jet Li and told him the story about how he wanted a tattoo that showed his love and respect for his fellow man and the extreme trials they face. And he showed Jet Li the tattoo and Jet Li started laughing and he said said it doesn't say that. And Tom said what do you mean? And Jet said " It say extreme man love". Lol
Yes. Because i value honesty. However, i believe honesty can be very constructive and far from a rude aggresssion. A true friend must be honest and not wear a mask. Although some people can not digest the concept of this and easily become offended and feel honesty is a way to attack them. Yet, i'd remain honest but polite in sake of my friend. A friend deserves the truth. Someone they can rely on for the pure reality. Someone they can hear the truth from.
Long ago, my then-boyfriend had himself tattooed "Dee Dee Devoured Me!"with an lousy image of me giving him a blowjob. I was flattered & hated it at the same time. It depends. If i thought it looked bad, no I'd keep that to myself. If they got a tattoo like you mentioned with words and it literally meant something different than they thought then yes. Ones opinions and one is fact that it means something different.
It’s a touchy situation. Tattoos don’t personally interest me, but being in the rock/metal world and playing at rock/metal venues, I’ve definitely seen some bad tattoos (plus some face tattoos).
I wouldn’t lie to someone and say it looks good when it clearly doesn’t, but I’m not going to outright go to someone and go like “Your tattoo looks like crap.” That seems uncalled for and very rude. If they want my opinion, they’ll ask for it.
If someone asks me “what do you think?” I’ll probably say something along the lines of “It’s not to my taste, but hey— whatever look you want to go for, y’know?” I understand that there is art that I may not get or like, but my judgement is not the end all be all. If it’s a realllly bad tattoo, like the person got some clearly *insert race* supremacist tattoo, I’d bluntly say that it does look bad.
If it was a close friend who got a realllly bad tattoo, I’d probably question their motives/reasonings more. I figure I could at least ask them what’s up instead of silently judging them.
I am honest so yes. tbh if i lied about that it would mean i would have respect for that person nor care. I don't see lying to protect someone's feelings as a nice thing to do.

I've had many people come up to me and just tell me they don't like my tattoos, or they are offended by them or that they are just plain stupid. More clever people will come up and ask or tell me if I like to jack off a lot, if I have a stack of sticky Playboy magazine, shake my hand and feign a crushing handshake from "overuse". The girls are the worst, as they are the most catty, and will say all the above but it's worse coming from a girl. the tattoos I have a professionally done and look great, crisp and bright. The issue is I'm always getting associated with porn and masturbation so nobody takes me seriously.
Only with very close friends. I have only said it to one friend who is a girl who got a shit tattoo above her arse which is a tramp stamp to most people. But only because we are always honest and it's nice to have someone who never bullshits. She hates it too and is getting it covered up eventually, it's just not her style at all it's flowers or butterflies and badly done and her other tattoos are all black and done by real artists. Another friend who was a bit of a cringey wannabe tough guy got a huge grim reaper type tattoo on his upper arm, it's so heinous but I didn't ever give an opiniom because he never asked.
If I had a close friend with a bad tattoo, I'm pretty sure I would let them know. I've known a few people with homemade tats. Those people typically already realize that it was a bad choice. I can't think of any friends with poor quality professional tattoos.
I would urge caution before they did it but once they have a tattoo it is theirs to live with and telling them it sucks won't achieve anything. Personally, I think all tattoos are poor decisions. Ask anyone that has had a tattoo more than 15 years what they think about it and see how they respond.
Have you actually talked to people like that? I feel like this trend blew up more recently so there are going to be way more adults with tattoos when I am your age but I don't think those who actually put thought into it won't regret it.
Yep. Everyone from a guy I worked with who regretted his navy tattoos on his forearms to my ex-girlfriend who regretted the neat Japanese kanji character on her shoulder. That was simple, artistic and well designed (didn't have fine lines that blur over time and was designed with good contrast so it wasn't too badly affected by fading/pigment migration) and still looked pretty good, unlike many out there. It just no longer represented what she wanted. The fact that you called it a trend should tell you everything about why I think it is inadvisable - fashion is fleeting by nature but tattoos are permanent. Do you still like what was important to you 15 years ago (Furby, Crazy Frog)?
I feel like it doesn't really ake sense to take a 4 yr vs 19 yr old and make the same presumtion for 30 yr old vs 45 yr old as the brain fully developes only at 24.
Fashion and tastes keep moving on just as quickly. Ask a 35 year old how proud they are about the decisions they made when they were 20. The Pussycat Dolls and the Black Eyed Peas lyrics probably don't seem so important anymore, either.
The tattoo pictured is AWESOME! For Questionable Content fans, this person is a badass. For others lacking context, it becomes a "No Regerts" situation. But that's the issue. Tattoos are subjective. They mean the world to one person, and nothing to another. So I'd give my honest opinion if asked, but I'd understand that person chose their tattoo based on their own choices.
I'm not gonna say yes or no I'm just gonna tell you a story about my dad and his tattoos. My dad once had a terrible tattoo of a hawk and his friend told the truth to my dad and he convinced my dad to cover it up with a better tattoo. To this day my dad still thanks his friend for telling him to cover up that tattoo.

Especially if they went to a second grade tat artist in order to get a lower price. I am German and your translation is correct. I would assume the person is in the BDSM lifestyle and would not critizise the tatoo. Maybe one can ask in a nice or humorous way whats the story behind, but it's not easy...
Yeah, I just questioned it cause 1) is was her own translation mistake and it's better to know what you have on your body 2) it may lead to some awkward situations if she goes to Germany for example 😅
Just to make one grammatical point clear. "Der Sklave" is a male noun but it can correctly be used for a female person. "Die Sklavin" would make it more clear, but in German the male form often can be applied to females as well. So gramatically it's (almost) correct. Only whether the intention is right, I cannot say.
My mum told me the same thing (she translates to german) but she was more agressive about a girl using "der sklave" instead of "die sklavin". But I would say that girl had no intention, but I guess she would still go with "der" to deter some gender stereotypes or whatever 😅
Why bother? They probably already know it anyway. It's not like they can take it back and exchange it or get their money back either. They are stuck with it so you may as well not add to the regrets by telling them how bad it is.
Not generally speaking no, because if they like it, that's all that matters. However, if I'm shown it and asked about it, then, I'd probably share my opinion. But, I'd still say the same thing to them "If you like it, that's all that matters".

I'd only tell them before they got it if I thought it was a bad idea for one... if it turns out bad I won't say anything, it's a bit late and if they were happy with it they won't like the input.

I don't like ANY tattoos, so I try to be as tactful as I can, and don't dwell on the subject. To me, tattoos are like bathroom graffiti - the only question is how much worse they make someone look.
I really don't stare deep enough into tattoos to be able to tell if it's poor quality or not. Although most people I see have few or no tattoos at all.
It's not for me to say. If they tell me that they think their tattoo is bad, I might agree with them. But if they really like it, then who am I to tell them it's bad?

Choosing to put art that you like on your body and making conclusions about their sexual habits based on it... yeah not much connection there. One thing is simply not liking it, another is if it makes them look stupid, it's better if a friend tells them and not a stranger in public (aka how my friend tattooed a word the meaning of which she did not really know which I described).
You not liking it is not "a good thing that would come of" you telling them. It's just you expressing your opinion and hurting their feelings, and probably your relationship with them.

My friend mistakenly tattooing a word "slave" on her back has nothing to do with me simply not liking it, I know I would be mad if my friends just let me look stupid and said nothing.
I read everything your said. You're just missing my point. There is nothing she can do about her tattoo, so you telling her you don't like it will not accomplish anything positive. You not liking it is not a valid reason to make her feel bad about something she cannot change anyway.
