Why do goths like being that pale?

well goth subculture started in the 80’s, and as a statement against the overall culture that valued tanning and looking “sporty”. they did the opposite. Plus the pale skin very much added on to the whole victorian/vampire look.
But honestly it’s a big stereotype and misconception because obviously you don’t have to be pale to be goth. white washing is an unfortunate and unnecessary thing in the goth community. and is much more than a style.

Well most goths are typically on the fairer side of skin tones and it helps to give a stark contrast in colors. Opposite colors compliment each other and it really works for their style in fashion with colors. It lays a good color foundation. That's just my opinion.

Because they'll burn up if they step into the sunlight. Maybe they like it but I think it must be a result of avoiding the sun for so long.

When the Goth looks started to come out as a type of fashion statement, it was stereo-typically based upon “life drained from the soul”. In the beginning, clothes were emulated darker clothing (to help keep the person from standing out). Pale or "white-ish makeup on the face, emulating the blood drained out and the body cold (no life). This was basically in reference to the way the teenagers felt. “Tossed away, unwanted, unloved, and depressed “.

These behaviors were also an alarming factor in the beginning because psychologists considered “Goth Attire” as the first signs of suicidal thoughts within teenagers. It wasn't until the early 90s that psychologists, after finally dealing with enough cases, considered it just a simple expression of self.

One of the biggest examples of this was Winona Ryder's character, Lydia Deetz, in the movie “Beetlejuice”

It's part of their fashion and culture. I don't know what the one makeup on their face is called though. However when i was in highschool, I saw a goth who had a light pink tint to her face makeup. Followed by black lipstick, fishnets, choker, and then a dress. I wanted to talk to her but i never did.
