In the majority of Indian movies which are not art films, women generally don't have any significant roles to play except for being arm candy. There the male actors carry the movies.

Directors show legs, and navels to keep it spicy, and still skip the very adult ratings on them. To be fair nowadays most educated parts of the population don't watch them at all and those movie halls act as a romantic gateway for young stupid couples to kiss and get handsy with each other in the dark. In recent years western movies are doing very well in India and inspiring good content.

But there are numerous numbers of proper artsy films that get released too.
