It's partly an issue of employer overreach, because requiring you to have and exercise the ability to wear makeup every day you come to work, and pay for the makeup yourself, while they are treating it like part of the required uniform for the job isn't fair.
I knew people in school who were freaking out about their first job because they didn't know how to put their hair up, or type fast. Those requirements make sense because they're for safety or productivity. But makeup is purely aesthetic. Requiring everyone to do it without having put that in the job description and providing at least the supplies is unreasonable of most employers.
The other reason it's an issue is just regular sexism. If women are allowed to wear makeup, men should also be. I've been to normal places where customer service men were wearing makeup, and it's no big deal. But a lot of employers still have old rules against it, even when they require the women to wear makeup.
So yeah. Just don't require it without a good reason and making it doable for all employees, and don't have a double standard about who is allowed. Plenty of places do fine so I don't see why the rest should be hung up on old judgmental superstitions.
I work in pharmacy & have as a technician specialist - one step below a pharmacist (pharmacists with 30 years experience have told me I should've been a pharmacist).
In general anyone in this position is to:
Provide exceptional customer service;
Provide general question & issue screening to rely proper info to a pharmacist;
Ensure that patients' medication is entered properly;
Ensure that patients' medication is processed properly;
Handle any complex insurance billing issues including phoning providers;
Ensure patients' receive equipment, like syringes, to administor medication accurately;
Oversee relief pharmacists & ensure that they follow company policies/procedures;
Assess the work of assistants and reduce / remove errors they commit;
Manage general medical inventory & oversee narcotic inventory;
And a few more things
I am also relied upon by the owner to manage hours for payroll; manage contractors & landlord issues for him; deal with complaints all the way up to the governing college if I can; and much more. Because as said I am a specialist & I am extremely adept.
.
I am writing all that because in my profession I have seen women who doll themselves up - including pharmacists - and they treat work like it's a fashion show.
I have found 9 out of 10 of them, like a pharmacist who nearly cost a patient her cancer treatment because the pharmacist did not do something as simple label a PCR COVID test so the patient could travel easily, who put more thought to looks than their work...
And freaking incompetent absolutely useless idiots
As I said that general list is someone ANYONE called a technician should be able to do. But a friend's pharmacy has female technicians wearing make-up and the imbeciles are barely able to answer the phone in a timely fashion.
So yes makeup is "good" in that it appeals to simple minded people that don't understand people that do use makeup are more often than not incompetent in their job. You're paid to work, not play at fashion inc.
You said elsewhere "Some companies actually require it."
Some companies do & if the girls had any understanding of the law, depending on the situation, they could sue. As happened a few years ago when a casino mandated that women had to wear makeup, wear stockings and generally look like a prostitute. That casino was sued and it was sued good.
Another company in the UK was sued about 5 years ago because it was proven that the company had no reason to fire the woman - not on attendance, not on work, etc - aside from the fact that she refused to be wearing excessive makeup.
No, they shouldn't have to. But I'm mixed on whether companies have a right to require it. Whether a company "should" do it is not the same as whether they "can" do it.
Personally I won't even work for a company that has a dress code. If I can't wear jeans and a casual shirt, I don't wanna work there. I also won't work for companies that do drug tests, check your social media, do credit checks, have rules against dating employees, or any other nonsense.

They don't have to and they shouldn't but you sure can if you want so - same for men tho
If it’s a beauty job, such as being a sales person in a makeup store, yes I think you should have to, as you’re providing extra advertisement for the products and you’re showing customers that you trust the products that you’re selling.
But in casual jobs such as office work or fast food or non-beauty related retail, no I don’t think you should have to.
@Razp_Sorbet im just curious what your thoughts are on this one? if you're in a job at a makeup store should you be required to wear makeup yourself?
@Still-alive if the company is providing the makeup to use, sure. My issue with it is that women have to pay out of pocket if makeup is required and decent makeup that is going to look nice all day isn't cheap.
Makes sense of course. Although i have a feeling most do not provide the makeup unfortunately.
I don't wear make-up and I would be highly against it if my employer expected me to wear it. I wouldn't even work there if that was a requirement.
Tell you right now, that would be an unhealthy work environment. I bet the social expectations of women would be from the old days where women were only a pretty face but treated like a stupid girl.
I say girl because they wouldn't call women, women back then. It was only girl which is really weird. That would be a no go for me and a red flag.
No, I feel like they should be able to wear it if they want or not wear it if they want.
I knew a girl who had an after school job when we were about 14, and her boss told her she had to wear makeup to work because she didn’t look presentable! Horrible! She was a child and looked perfectly fine! (She was a waitress in a cafe that sold burgers etc)
I rarely, if ever, wear makeup. It’s such a chore to put on and expensive to buy. No women should be required to wear makeup to work, that is a ridiculous request that employers want to force upon their employees.
If I ever had an employer require me to wear makeup as part of a uniform or “just because”, I would not continue to work for them. They can replace me with someone who is willing to follow their stupid requirement like a trained seal.
They can if they want, obviously, but they certainly should not be required to. That would be sexism.
Although, there are some jobs, like working certain high end retail or fashion jobs, or top corporate positions, in which a woman would be expected to wear makeup and classy attire.
Depends what place we're talking about.
I imagine some places, like fancy restaurants or flight attendants pay special attention to what their assistants wear and how they look. There they might force you to get makeup they prefer.
@Razp_Sorbet
Would YOU be unhappy if you were asked to use make up?
I woke in a kitchen so it would be horrible to have to wear it. But I would be angry if any company tried to force anyone to wear makeup.
Yeah most I'll do it my brows and maybe some highlighter, but you get a natural highlight after an hour in the kitchen. Sweat stuck to flour particles 😌
Women don't have to wear makeup in the workplace. The only place where that may not be the case would be a job where you deal with makeup or if you were doing modeling of some kind, those kinds of jobs it makes sense.
But I've never worked at any place that required women to wear it.
That's absolutely fine if it's a condition and expected because of their working environment.
Otherwise if there's no rules or regulations then it should be every woman's prerogative to do as she chooses.
I selected "they can if they want", but of course no woman should "have to" wear makeup. That should be up to the discretion of any woman. It should be her decision and no one else's.
No , if she feels comfortable without make up then let her be , most girls have natural beauty where she doesn’t need make up at all but it’s her choice , you shouldn’t be forced to have to wear make up for a friggin job period
It's their opinion to have make up on them or not. Mostly all the girls like to wear makeup and want to be attractive. Although getting ready with that makes feel good like if you are going to office then your face have to be pleasent so adding some bit of makeup is a best one.
Shouldn't HAVE to. But also depends on what the position is. Usually if your job is dealing soberly with customers face to face, then usually looking presentable and poshed is preferred by management
I never have worn makeup & I happen to oversee an entire company as the lead exec admin. Boots on the ground - what 98% of the customers see - I AM the face of the company aside from the CEO.
Have to? Other than, perhaps, selling cosmetics, I don't think 'have to'. However, employers get to make rules for their workplace. They have that right.
Heck no. Guys are doing it for us these days 🥳😃😃😂😂😂
Jokes aside.
No.
I work outside and the weather is not forgiving to makeup. Rain wind snow heat sweat vehicle smog heavy machinery smoke, u name it. A good facial cleaning routine is far better than any make up.
I chose ‘they can if they want’ because, some people born with sensitive skin, but still want to wear makeup but there are certain days where their skin can’t deal with makeups (breakouts).
Personally i’d wear makeup to work only when my overly sensitive skin is in a good state. So at least i’d look good when i’m actually wanna beat the shit outta these Karens at work.
I think we should have the choice I think it adds confidence some of us need in the workspace
There is no requirement for a woman to wear makeup, nor should there be. If a woman wants to wear makeup, that's her choice.
Some companies actually require it.
Thats a choice they are completely free and is solely up to them to make. And ideally never be pressured or forced into making that decision.
I generally dislike the word 'should' in most situations suffice to say lol.
I also think guys can make this decision to wear it or not at the workplace too. hell yeah!
Exactly i agree
Nobody but women think they should wear make up everyday, everywhere. In reality, it is not needed. And more soothing to see confident natural women. I wish I understood why 99% women always wear it.
99% of women don't always wear makeup. Less than 50% wear makeup every day
