Because unless you're doing sfx make up it just brings out your natural features. On stages like those in these competitions there are crazy bright lights. Stage make up is heavy for a reason. The lights wash you out and make you look insanely weird without any sort of make up on. Besides, beauty isn't only skin deep and believe it or not these competitions aren't only about how beautiful they look.

Then they aren't beauty contests. They're "woke beauty" contests. Back in the day people had no qualms about judging others for strictly outward appearance.

I'm not sure why everyone feels entitled to be called beautiful because they have a nice personality. Jesus this generation is lost.

Beauty pageants started for entertainment. It was just a way to enter the average middle class white person.
They have always had aspects of talent and current events, they're required to think fast on questions they're being asked because the winner is often having to speak at events for the next year.
If they simply based it on beauty alone the competition would be over with in 10 minutes and that wouldn't be very entertaining

I don't know, it's weird especially since it's not even light make up but heavy one and in France plastic surgery is forbidden so it make it even weirder

That's a good question, they should be able to get away with less makeup and be somewhat natural to show they actually are beautiful with little to no makeup. Perhaps, they should have an au naturelle segment in the contest.

Although, I can tell right now, Miss Amazona at the very end could wear the most hideous outfit and still look mucho bueno!

  • Beauty contests often emphasize enhancing one's natural features, and makeup is a tool that helps contestants do that. It allows them to showcase their creativity, highlight their unique features, and present themselves confidently. It's not just about beauty; it's about expressing personality and style. Besides, makeup is a widely accepted part of many cultural and professional practices, adding a layer of artistry to the competition. What's your take on makeup in beauty contests? Do you think it enhances or hides natural beauty? 😊

The use of makeup has been around for over 4000 years; not exactly a new, or a "woke" concept as you stated to another commenter.

Hollywood made the use of it more widespread and mainstream backnin the 1920's and has been a staple of beauty standards ever since.

As for beauty pageants, the sole purpose of heavy makeup is to combat the washing out of bright stage lights. The makeup, usually, is applied to look light under heavy white light. Take that white light away and it looks extra heavy. That's it. That's the science behind it. Before the arrival of those bright white lights, makeup had to be done to work against yellow light. To some extent, this is why, in black and white television from way back, they had to use certain colors to better pop instead of looking pure black. Purples and greens were used to great extent on screen as their b&w appearance looked detailed.

Same things are applied in photography and all of modern cinema. So, again, not new, not woke, just is.

I used to perform in a few things when I was younger and it was ugly to see all the veins on everyone's faces from the harsh lighting so we were all forced to wear "mac" -- even the guys.

At the end of the day the whole point was to appeal to the judges who would have been red blooded men back in the day. Now it's probably homosexuals and obese women with mustaches so eh.

But doesn't that make it an art contest rather than a beauty contest?

If you're judging beauty, shouldn't it be based on natural features?

You're correct that not everyone has model features. But not everyone blessed with extreme intelligence or extreme physical abilities either and yet, people are still judged based on these. I don't know why people get so butthurt when it comes to beauty.

@HawkPerception H, what you are saying make sense and actually if you go back in time to Ms. world 1976 they actually had that beauty competition as natural beauties without makeup. However, beauty shows of today , while judging on intelligence and talent seems to try to play up the beauty aspect more than ever. They showcase bathsuits and like what does that have to do with anything really? But you see it in everything. Even if people want to sell cars most commercials have beautiful women with makeup etc. Its just to give more appeal more or less.

sorry dear. to use the artist comparison it's more like judging the difference between michaelangeo's david and a $199 3d print replica. one is a fake but at a distance, can you tell the difference? using makup is a woman's attempt to trick the human eye into believing she's more beautiful than she really is, and hope that the viewer doesn't care.

But if their appearance needs to get improved, it means it's not that high and not so beautiful in the first place. It's not a makeup artist contest, in my opinion it should be natural beauty.

All I said was that makeup improves their appearance. Itโ€™s on a stage with hot lights and the judges are not sitting one on one with each contestant. Itโ€™s logical to wear makeup
