Why do Americans call underwear thongs?

Ok I’m naive on this cause I’m a basic Aussie and thongs 🩴 are open strap shoes here. Yet in America it’s basically what we call thicker G bangers or strings. Why do you guys call them thongs? It’s confusing lol.

A few decades ago, Americans did call their strap shoes "thongs". It was only recently that it now refers to G-strings. If you're an aussie, there is nothing wrong with naming strap shoes as "thongs" but it might cause confusion to people if you're holidaying in the US.

That pretty much describes the tiny piece of fabric that is a thong.

Well your thongs have a thin strip that goes between your toes. Underwear thongs have a thin strip that goes between your ass. So the system is the exact same, just the usage is different. In the UK we say thongs for underwear too, and those sandals don't seem to be very popular here but we probably just call them sandals. I'm not sure what we call actual sandals.

Thongs are only one certain type of underwear or panties, you have g string, bikini, string bikini, and many others. For the shoes the are flip flops, because of the sound they make, and then you also have sandals

I DON"T call underwear thongs. I grew up in a time when sandal-like footwear was always called thongs. And I STILL call them thongs. And I never refer to panties as thongs
