Am I the only person that didn’t know women’s clothing zips and buttons up the opposite of a guy’s?

I was wearing a woman’s jacket this weekend and was thoroughly confused when I was trying to button it up! At first I thought it was inside-out but was told that women’s clothing is designed that way. I just couldn’t believe, with my superior intelligence, that I never knew this! Did all of you know this?

A small thing and not important. A wonderful woman friend from a past job we shared, gave me a beautiful 'hip length' leather coat, that she had made in Florence, Italy. I was completely shocked that she would give me such a beautiful coat. Her hubby, said "Wear it and enjoy it"... and I do.

The jacket buttons on the left as opposed to on the right, but WHO SEES IT? I never thought about, I just wear my beautiful 'woman's leather coat 'IN STYLE... BTY, bought matching expensive gloves, and a Cashmere scarf... to boot!

I got a new jacket with the zipper on the left. I thought they just fucked up and that it was a left handed person's jacket or something.

But yeah, I had no clue. It's something I view the same as being potty trained, I trust people to handle themselves on their own. Therefore, it doesn't cross my mind.

You are kinda right, actually. They are designed that way so servants had an easier time dressing women back in the day. Guys dressed themselves, so they made their clothing right handed friendly.

I had to look up why they’re designed that way. It’s because back in “the day”, women had servants that would dress them, so they designed their clothing for a right handed person to dress them, since most people are right handed.

I have a really nice camel hair coat from Italy, and it zips up and buttons from the opposite side as my regular stuff does.
I've had a couple of ski jackets that did the same thing.

The reason this is reversed is that once-upon-a-time women were dressed by other women. Having the buttons reversed made it easier for another (right -handed) woman to dress her lady.
