How do you feel about those under 18 wanting plastic surgery?

There are some teens that are relentlessly teased for things like big ears that stick out or a large nose who because of the constant bullying often started in their early childhood, want plastic surgery as teens to "fix the issue." If it were your teen (15-17 years of age) AND money were no issue, would you let them do it with your permission if you were aware of the bullying and you saw how depressed they were every day or regardless of that, you would require them to wait until they were at least 18.

Bodies are not finished growing by 18. So, any changes you make can possibly also change after you do it. But I do understand how kids can be picked on for looking different. That is why I support Smile Train, that corrects cleft lips and cleft palates through surgery. Kids don't need to be teased for looking different and maybe be drummed out of school. These conditions are more prevalent in 3rd world countries like Haiti. These are the only surgeries I would endorse before 18. But then again, it would really depend on their deformity, like as in these children. The cleft lip, once known as the 'hare lip', is often identified via ultrasound during the second trimester of pregnancy. This early detection allows for timely intervention and care planning. The first surgery typically occurs when the child is around six months old. This initial procedure is followed by another one between 14 to 18 months, focusing on the palate. The final surgery, addressing the total cleft, is performed when the child reaches the age of five.

I'd say wait until your 18+. I remember being 11/12 and waiting to have bigger breasts and even had plans of having a boob job when older. Eventually those thoughts vanished and I love my breasts now. Sometimes is just a phase so definitely wait until you're 18.

No and no. Any image surgery, including trans people should be 18 or after. These are children who have no experience and have no idea what they want. NO. Once you are 18, out on your own, in the real world, learned somethings, OK. And no I am not transphobic. I have been around more actual trans people than anyone here. I just don't think doing any kind of image surgery is OK for any child. I don't care if it is a nose job or a boob job. No. These kids don't even realize the partner of their dreams might be around the corner who absolutely LOVES their feature. No one thinks about that. Kids around this age think everything is so finite and hopeless. And I tie this into the extremism of school shooters. Same thing. Kids thinking they have to do extreme things, because they are at the end. Same thing. No. Wait a few years, get out there, see the real world, and then decide.

Children don't understand their bodies or really anything significant until they are much older not even 18 is old enough in truth. 22- 25 in truth is a more fair age of maturity.

18 is just a low number because its still young enough for the military to talk guys into charging machine gun nests without question while also being old enough to be physically and mentally capable of more basic grunt work in war. Although you shouldn't put anyone that young in charge of planning anything.

18 is not an age of maturity for we humans.

I remember wanting an earring when I was in Jr. High. I also remember my dad saying he'd rip it out of my ear if I did. That was enough to discourage me. By the time I was 18 I didn't even want an earring.🤣

No I wouldn't allow a child of mine to get plastic surgery. All kids endure bullying at some point. But generally it's counteracted by parents that let their kids know they are loved and have value. Most of the problem with kids today is absent parents. And I'm not bagging on parents because it takes a lot to keep a family running in today's world. But I still thank my parents for what they did for me. Because we were actually kind of poor. But we were NEVER poor in spirit or in love.

It's sad. Unless you're looking to get something like a nose job or something that you can objectively say is deformed.

If the family can afford it, no one should have to go through life with a crazy looking nose or a deformed jaw simply because of the stigma around plastic surgery.

But if its just someone being insecure... Well that's why it's a good thing you have to wait till 18.

I don't love the idea of permanently altering the body of a minor unless there was an actual deformity. The woman on the left is beautiful, it's really a trivial thing to pursue surgery over. As far as bullies, that's part of life. I think teaching her how to deal with losers and bullies is far more valuable.

Also, plastic surgery is only under warranty for around 5-10 years (unless a law suit closes the clinic down before then, in which case you're screwed),

99% of the time they will have to get a "corrective" procedure before long too as the natural bone and skin grow to adapt or reject the modification

You are 100 % correct, in your assessment, and if parents were not blind, and saw the anguish that others cause their kids, they would WANT to change whatever feature was a problem or source of ridicule for their child.

I had to become an adult and correct features that I did not like (family features) and I resented my parents because of it.

No I wouldn't firstly because I am teaching my children how to deal with bullies. Secondly letting a child get plastic surgery while there bones, muscles, tendons etc are still growing and changing shape is a recipe to lead to them looking infinitely worse

i wouldn't suggest it. it's also not an issue. when i was younger i was so insecure about my nose. now i don't give a fuck and another nose would look weird on me. we have clearer minds when we're older.

as for the bullies, they will just find something else on the kid to make fun of them. just saying.

Unless it's to fix some horrible disfigurement, plastic surgery in general is just self-mutilation. Surgery isn't going to fix your body image issues. A positive mental attitude will.

I had that as a kid. I used to get teased all the time. If one of my kids had something hideous that kids made fun of them for I would consider it. My daughter would not be getting a boob job however.
