The full word is Gymnasium, with gym just being a shortened form of it. Yes it does mean a place for exercises - School for naked exercises, although some references also include loin clothed.
The crazy bit is that in some European countries, such as Germany, it’s used as the name for a School type.

That’s a pretty out there thought. Some people consider gym clothing revealing, but I don’t ever wear anything to the gym that I would consider revealing…

Not an oxymoron, since it's not the opposite "too and revealing" aren't opposites. It MIGHT be redundant, kind of like how it's redundant to get pepperoni AND sausage on a pizza
