Men, would you want to wear skirts or dresses?

Okay, before everyone starts getting all fussy, I know these are typically feminine articles of clothing and I understand the societal struggle to want men to be "men." yadda yadda, BUT dresses and skirts can be SO comfortable and practical.

Late? Slip on a dress with some seamless shorts underneath, some shoes and yer done. ha ha I love them.

I'm just curious, if it were more socially acceptable would you wear one? :D

Obviously, they would be tailored for men in the same way that pants became tailored for women :)

Clothes communicate: social status, group identity, occupation, conformity vs. eccentricity, and of course, gender identification and/or sexual preference!
Pants are practical for many purposes and both sexes now wear them, although usually tailored for better fit to their sex and otherwise gendered by color and fashion conventions.
However practical a skirt or dress might be in some instances, most men would avoid them simply because of the obvious consequences, ranging from being considered an oddball, to being harassed or even assaulted for being "queer" or "sissy." So the question isn't really "would you want to" but would you want to if you thought you could get away with it?
A minority of men, both gay and straight, clearly DO want to wear skirts and dresses, because they go ahead and do so, even if they have to pay a high social cost, typically: family estrangement, limited job prospects, social shunning and harassment.
I'm sure that there are many more who would not hesitate to try skirts and dresses––enjoying them for practicality, pleasure or gender play––within a sort of desert island scenario, where they'd be certain no one would ever see them, and today's ever present smartphone voyeurs wouldn't make them wear that choice forever on the internet.
But that's not the real world, is it? For the "real world answer" to your question, just step outside. I doubt that 1 in 100 men are wearing skirts or dresses publicly on any given day.

Hmm, a skirt would be kind of embarassing to wear (read argumentation pls).

I mean, it would look vulgar and all those sorts of things because the men tends to be the one to initiate sex I think, so I think it would cause some very strange reactions, and still be morally not really accepted if it would become accepted someday.

Apart from that, I would feel pretty weird knowing that it might raise some sexual innuendo (hence maybe seen as perversity), and I must keep myself restricted in all ways.

That would put pressure on me, because, you see, a girl can just get wet, but a man...

We got our pants protecting us from that to a certain degree because pants don't bend nearly as much as skirts : ).

Hmm I don't know what more to say, that's kind of it, if we'd get sexual feelings we'd probably be regarded as pervs or so, that's the real problem behind it.

Or they should find out another version of a skirt or something lol.

It'd be quite a step for a man, wearing a skirt, as skirts are now, I think it'd be uncomfortable for most men for named reasons.

If they made a new skirt and THAT got accepted, well then perhaps.

I only wouldn't know how they'd do that but perhaps they'll inevnt something like that in the future.

Soldiers used to wear skirts in the roman army I believe but they were from iron or steel so that fixes things too.

If it were more socially acceptable, I most certainly would. Considering the fact that they seem easier and far more comfortable than pants or shorts. I have often thought that society has actually gotten this one aspect completely backwards. Men are always looking to do things the quickest and easiest way possible. Well, what is easier than throwing on a comfortable pair of underwear and tank top or t-shirt that goes down to your knees? Step into a pair of sandles and you're on your way! To me, that sounds just like the typical easiness that us men are always looking for. The same can be said for skirts. Practically every activity (aside from strenuous physical labor) would be easier in a skirt... Not a form fitting 'pencil' skirt; but a comfortable, loose-fitting skirt will provide far more range of motion than shorts or pants ever could. Another benefit seems like it would be warmth and comfort in cooler times. With pants, your legs are separated by individual pieces of cloth, allowing airflow between. With an ankle length skirt or dress, both legs are in the same compartment, allowing for your legs to keep each other warm (similar to how mittens actually keep your fingers warmer than gloves). And, in even colder temperatures, the dress or skirt over top of a tight-fitting pair of pants, leggings or tights would be the most ideal temperature control possible. In my opinion, the only thing that makes dresses and skirts overtly feminine is the colors and cuts. Brings pinks and purples, pastel colors, floral patterns, etc. are all considered feminine because of how soft and gentle they are. Low V cuts are feminine because of their cleavage revealing nature, wavy fabric at collars and sleeve ends is also considered feminine because society tells men that we have to be rigid and tough and anything that softens our rigidity is not masculine. It would be entirely possible to make comfortable and functional dresses and skirts for men. And, I think it is also entirely possible to maintain a healthy level of masculinity wearing them. Because as the old saying goes... Done right, the clothes don't wear the man; the man wears the clothes.

I wear knee-length skirts or a dress all the time because it helps with skin allergy & wouldn't think of wearing anything other than a skirt for work and dresses made for me. There are, no female clothing in my wardrobe there all mine. As we know skirts have been worn by a man Boys for thousands of years look into the history books. So a skirt was worn by Egyptian people & a dress by Roman men like Julia cesser & others take a look & see what you think? In my opinion, it's the right thing to wear & if more Boys wore one the commoner it would be, plus a lot healthier for all males. Trousers/pants were called pantaloons & were for riding a horse, so as most of us don't ride horses why do you need them. You wouldn't wear your golfing equipment to go to work would you, so why are trousers/ pants worn. Because it wasn't the thing to do years ago but now it's what is the norm why should it be. Who said so. It doesn't have anything to do with the point people saying that you'd get beaten up if you wore a skirt/dress were talking about the change of use skirt/dress for trousers /pants or anything like that. Remember trousers /pants were not first. But skirts and dresses, so common let's all wear them and be healthier. Also, remember that there are other names for the garment thought out the world.

I have to chime in, I'm about to be 49 married with 4 kids and after 30+ years of using baby powder down in my nether regions due to hot summers and chaffing I would love a clothing that lets us guys have a little more freedom and movement with our junk... Boxers are an important roll in helping relief some of the issues but then we put pants on making our junk compressed against us so with every movement our junk is rubbing up against our thighs creating the issues I described. Would I wear a skirt? HELL YES if it was made to look masculine, is that possible? Would I wear a dress? Again if it were made to look masculine YES! But it needs to be socially acceptable in order for us guys to wear a skirt or dress in public, and the only way this is going to happen is if 60% or more men are willing to wear this type of clothing. We actually had this discussion at work the other day, we are jealous of women being able to wear skirts and dresses and how cool and relaxing they are during hot days... Hey guys wouldn't you like to have a nice breeze around your junk during those hot days? Just think about it for a moment and then think if this was acceptable would I wear one for comfort?

We are all human and are susceptible to changes. For the longest time in human history guys wore skirt & skirt-like clothing. It has only been since the Renaissance period that men fully embraced wearing pants. Women have shown their interest in having equal empowerment and by doing so the women of royal/nobility began wearing high heels copying after their mal counterparts.
Since the Women's Rights Movement, women have not only won the right to vote but among other key factors, women began wearing pants like that of their male counterparts.
A similar thing is happening among guys and that they too want to be free in comfort from the rigidness from wearing pants. And by doing so they are gradually discovering and living out the freedom that wearing a skirt (from a guy point of view) has to offer.
It's like a trade off but it's not, it's more like gaining back something we since little boys were taught not to wear, to stay clear from or face humiliation.
Well we are grown men, free to express through thought, word and action. If we don't actively use those rights then it's like we forfeight those rights and we are nolonger 'Free Men'.

The funny thing is, men in other cultures wear clothing that could be called a dress. Look at some of the middle eastern countries such as Saudi Arabia. And there's always the Kilt in Scotland!

But I don't think you'll ever see a straight guy wearing that stuff in western society (aside from the kilt of course).

I wear skirts or dresses everywhere and while doing nearly everything: church, work, shopping, doctors' visits, traveling, sports car club meetings … you name it. Average amount of hassle from others (not counting my brother), about once a year.
Speaking of my sports car club, I was told that whenever we have a meeting or other non-driving event, "everyone wonders what (I'm) going to wear." At the Christmas Party I'm pretty sure my red, sequined, halter-neck evening gown didn't disappoint; a friend of mine said I looked stunning!
So gentlemen, if you're think you'd to go out in public in a skirt or dress, first walk around in it enough that it feels comfortable and natural to you and then, "Just do it!"

I come from a deep Scott\Irish background so the kilt is a part of my heritage.

Actually, did you know that originally the kilt wasn't a "skirt for guys" but a full body wrap that the men wore close to their body to defend against the harsh cold winters? At times, the kilt was even pulled up between the legs like pants so the guy could run faster.

I have actually been looking into this topic recently. I've read some articles about the practicality of men wearing skirts. It seems as though it makes sense given out anatomy to wear something that doesn't have an inseams.

I also know that it was quite common in the old days for men to wear skirts. I hear that they are very cool on a hot summer day and they allow your legs to move freely.

I would definitely like to try one out. I don't think it would make me appear less manly as I would continue to wear my normal shirts and shoes. I'm also pretty muscular and think I would look good.

I'm not sure if I should try a kilt or something like a cargo skirt. What do you think?

I think that if a woman can wear both pants and skirts a man should be able to too. I like wearing dresses and skirts. I think they are more comfortable, especially on a hot day. I don't wear skirts and dresses everywhere because society isn't too accepting of it. I have gone out in public wearing a skirt, but only in places where I knew I could get away with it. I do not try to look like a woman when wearing a dress or skirt, nor do I want to. I think wearing a dress or skirt can be masculine. Hopefully someday society will be completely accepting of it.

I have a couple "kangas" from traveling, it's basically just a piece of fabric I wrap like a towel and it wears like a skirt. I used to have a 9 yard kilt, but that's long gone. I love to wear to wear skirts, but I haven't been able to find any men's skirts for sale that fit my style. I'd like to be able to find short cargo or denim skirts that still look like they were styled for a man's body shape. I've made denim miniskirts from old jeans that seemed to flatter my build. Yes, I said miniskirts. I feel that my shaved legs are rather androgynous looking and one of my best features. Trying to convert cargo shorts into skirts is a bit beyond my ability to sew, at least for now. That's the issue I have with a lot of female clothing (besides the fact that the quality of women's clothing compared to men's clothing at the same price point is inferior, usually from having insufficient heft and using more flimsy material).

Heels slow you down and, pardon the French, fuck up your feet. And basically lets everyone in a 1-mile radius know that you're approaching.
The longer the dress, the more it restricts movement, making it harder to run.
Jewellery makes it easier for an assailant to grab and use it against you.

I would imagine a very short skirt might be equivalent to a pair of short pants, in terms of not restricting movement. But once they get closer to the knees, I can only see a restriction of movement and freedom.

Both my wife and I Absolutely love the feel and look of skirts over shorts. Both my wife and I Really wish skirts where labeled as unisex. I personally prefer to pair skirts with leggings and boots. There are some health benefits to a man wearing a skirt. The main one is that it is good for a man's sperm count. It allows the testicles to stay at a lower temperature then the rest of the body. Plus they are comfortable. I wear one all the time at home. My wife supports it. Men originally wore skirts and skirt like garments, and in most of the world men still wear them. I believe that if women can wear whatever they want to so can men. Women wear pants and other articles of clothing that are considered for men and nobody says anything about it. So men should be allowed to wear what they want without being judged.

I want to wear a skirt as part of my normal wardrobe but MOH doesn't approve. I suit a skirt and have nice legs. I find a skirt comfortable and when out and about find that people just don't care what I wear. I think that men should have the same fashion choices as women and be able to wear similar things. A skirt, in itself ( unless flowery or frilly and that applies to most garments ) is mainly a unisex garment and I have plain A-line, straight and denim skirts that I don't think look out of the ordinary. I am comfortable with skirt wearing and try to convince MOH that there's nothing wrong with it. I have been in shops wearing a skirt and bought skirts and get positive comments all the time. Yes, I get the occasional double-take but they are few. So guys, I know what a big step it is to go out the front door in a skirt but just do it. Your friends will soon get used to it.

Most men's fashion is boring, having the option to wear a skirt or dress expands the options available, plus it's often more comfortable and more healthy! I wear skirts and dresses from time to time, usually in environments where it is more acceptable - alternative clubs and music festivals but am beginning to get braver! I'm not gay, not that that should even be a consideration, and not trying to identify as female. My choices are more masculine styles and veer towards a rock n roll aesthetic. Rock musicians have a long history of blurring gender choices in fashion and I draw inspiration from here. It's time that fashion truly embraced this trend and designed and created high street clothing for men including skirts and dresses that men might choose. Worn both. Pants suck unless you’re working hard, manual labor. There’s a lot of stuff down there and no where comfortable to put it. Coming home from work, taking a shower, cleaning up and putting on a skirt is so relaxing, cool and comfortable. If it’s cold, wear a longer dress or add stockings. Almost every fabric made for women is meant to feel soft and sensual. No binding in the crotch and if I find a blouse that accepts my shoulders and arm thickness I don’t get chafed. I do it at home a lot. I'm 46 and a " straight " man. They are more comfortable to lounge in and to be honest they just look nice too. My last girlfriend used to like Me to wear her knickers under them too. That was a super turn on for both of us.

I doubt it will become a fashion trend but a few adventurous men will venture out in a Skirt in place of shorts.

I wore them for a play (don't ask lmao) and they're so impractical. They fly up, I tripped over mine, it's exactly as complicated as pants or shorts
