When it comes to recognizing the cornucopia of courtship signals that a lady uses to show a chap that she fancies him, a man is about as clever as a savage at a kabuki drama. Women, who have a worldly understanding of this language, and who consciously use it all the time to attract mates, often find themselves singing their Siren song, as it were, to the deaf. So here, for Cro-Magnon man, is a no-nonsense list of signs to look out for.

On the beach or in the street

* Backwards glance over her sholder: this signal means 'follow me.' So follow her.

* Hair touching: if she touches or plays with her hair, you're on her radar.

* Head toss: often accompanied by the hair flick - you've got runway clearance.

* The hair flick: like the head toss, this is imitated by some gay men.

Across the room

* Smoothing or checking clothing: in a bundle of signals this is often her first move.

* Displaying the inside of the wrists: frequently combined with hair touching, it's a green light.

* Thumb in the belt: this 'pointing' gesture is sexually assertive - maybe you like that.

* Sideways glance through partly closed eyelids: if she looks away as you catch her eye, it's a frank come-on.

Closer together

* Hand/s on hips, with body pointing towards you: things are warming up.

* Slowly crossing and uncrossing the legs: rather like the trader setting his barrow.

* The long intimate gaze with dilated pupils: serious 'trouser disturbance' time.

* Stroking of long object, such as a bottle, bread stick or pepperpot: oh, come on.

* Finger sucking: for crying out loud! If she finds some reason to ask you to suck her finger, or sucks yours, you're wasting valuable time. Get upstairs.

Men are absolute CRAP at reading female signs , as we have totally different brain wiring to the female brain , we have to be taught what to look for. Also men are severely bashed nowadays for showing even a tiny hint of interest to a woman , even with a huge green light , many will not approach. I have seen young women give overt " green lights " to men , only to viciously shoot them down when they approached , as a form of " fun " , saw this many a time as former door staff.

If a woman I am highly attracted to gives me some clear signs like strong eye contact, bright smiles, enthusiasm during passing conversation, multiple glances, giggling, etc. I will know right away she thinks I am cute or handsome. I am a shy guy so it is difficult for me to work up the nerve to take the conversation to the next level so I am sure many women think I am disinterested. Sometimes I will flirt, but it is usually with women I am not really interested in and just do it for fun. I feel bad about that now, because I may have kept their hopes up a little bit, and it makes me realize that women have it tough out there too even though men are the ones that are usually expected to approach or in the very least suggest a date.

I know it is a confidence issue, but it is getting better. Sometimes I do get thoughts like "wow! she likes me! what does she see in me? is she just being friendly?" and my mind/ego tries to screw me out of a good thing. Ugh! Makes me want to kick my brain, he is the antithesis of a wing-man and the ultimate "cockblocker" (I mean that in the relationship/dating sense and not the ONS/player sense).

Of course if a guy isn't attracted, he might feel terrible about it. The opportunity is there, but for whatever reason, he might opt out. Could be that you are too old for his taste; I have had some women in their mid-40s give me all types of flirty comments and hints (they tend to be more aggressive in this way). Could be that you have children (don't really want that baggage or coming in second at this point in my life). Could be that you are not my type or any of the reasons women also reject men (we are more similar than many people think). I know I feel terrible about it though, because it feels good to be desired and I am a people pleaser, I like people to feel good, especially when I am responsible for it as it makes me feel wonderful. Perhaps this is why some confident men have flings and friends with benefits with women because he likes her, but doesn't see her as a woman he'd have a LTR with.

As a female with an interest in human psychology and, following that, the intricacies of non-verbal communication, I have to say WOMEN DON'T DO THESE THINGS. The only tell-tale signs (and these don't hold true for everybody, especially if you're aware of them and actively repress them) are maintained eye contact, close physical proximity, and adopting a body posture such that the centre of the body (i. e., the trunk) faces towards the person of interest. That's really it. The rest are flirtatious gestures that a women may engage in once she's already communicated her interest and made sure that you reciprocate her fancy.
If you're wondering if a woman fancies you, these are not the signs to look for--these are the signs you'll see once you're already certain that she does!

Girls in general don't have the social skills or imperative to clearly state to a man that she is interested, instead she gives subtle hints that he has a "chance"
