He grabbed my shoulders from behind and shook me; was he flirting?

I'm 22 and the guy I like is 23. We've been sort of friends for 6 months, but as of last night I hadn't seen him in 2 weeks, and during those 2 weeks we started texting and getting to know each other better. When I saw him last night, he didn't have the option of approaching me from the front because I was leaning my front side against a counter, so he came up behind me, grabbed my shoulders (near my neck), and shook me. Gently, not violently. I knew it was him so I turned around with a big smile on my face and we said HEY! to each other and then he hugged me. Was he flirting or just being friendly? I was already pretty sure he liked me before he did this.
