find out whether he's into sport, find out what team he follows, find out latest results, if the team had successful games or a game - text him asking whether he liked it or seen it. If u ask whether he liked it, makes you seem as if you're into sports (which draws attention)

Why do you need an excuse? If you want to talk to someone, just message them. All you have to do is say "Hey, how are you?" and if they want to talk to you, they will respond and you can go from there.
