Is "Make me a sandwich" a common joke in the USA?

Living in Europe, in a non-English country, I don't understand the meaning behind this joke.

Sure, I understand the "housewives in the kitchen, making food" part, but it seems so unnatural to me.

"Feminazis" Will find it offensive, however any reasonable girl will not find it offensive if the person telling the joke is not serious. I will use it on occasion, for instance, I girl I used to know, she was no feminazi or anything, but she was a real bitch 75% of the time. Whenever this girl would start getting sassy with me or even start yelling at me for no particular reason, I'll give a cynical laugh, then with a somber look on my face, I'll tell her, "What is your fat ass doing outside the kitchen!?" She'll begin with something, "You -!" cutting her off I would say hastily, "I grant you permission to talk only when my sandwich is ready!"

Due to the rise in feminism in American culture, some women get really easily offended by making remarks about gender roles. So saying "make me a sandwich" is just joking about how women used to be the primary food-makers. What makes it funny is that some women do get genuinely offended at something so trivial and meaningless.

yes in the US a lot of guys make that joke. it's funny at first and it's funny if you know they're joking, but with the job I had being surrounded by all guys you wouldn't believe (or maybe you would lol) how incredibly sexist a lot of guys actually are.

I've heard some pretty messed up stuff, and not jokes, but things that they're dead serious about when they think I can't hear them talking. It's pretty crappy! but as far as the sandwich thing its OK if you're joking about it and you don't say it ALL the time

annoying crazy feminist girls find it really offensive. But most girls just laugh. It's really common, like if a girl is talking a lot, or being a smart ass about something a lot of guys will just be like "can you just shut up and make me a sandwich."

If it's a joke then I find it funny but some guys will say it like they're joking then when I laugh they say something like "uh...I was serious..." then I take it offensively. Just FYI I love to cook and I'm usually in the kitchen when guy friends come over so I get it a lot. Some guys even joke about me being their wife already because if I'm making myself something of course I offer them something too! It would be rude not to and I was raised with southern hospitality.
