he's this popular guy that is talking to me. I’m kind of like that “shy mysterious girl” to him. He hasn’t said anything sexual other than how he thought I was so pretty. We have been flirting and he keeps trying to start conversations and keep them going. Then he randomly said... I wanna hug you... is this friendzone?

No... means he finds you cute and want a to see what it feels like to hug you. Could be a prelude to him trying it on, or it could simply be he doesn't know if he is attracted to you or just protective... and for many men (and women), a hug sorts thst out pretty quick...

It means when you hug someone, your body and mind analyse everything from all senses - the body scent, temperature, heartbeat, pheromones etc to your physical reaction then decides if the connection is emotional (ie a close friend), familial (a family member), relationshippy (you're compatible with this person) or just sexual (self explanatory). Or if you're creeped out, it will register this person is not for you. It is a natural non verbal communication skill which is totally underused. Given we learn it from birth... It's how a baby knows when mummy is holding him/her, and throws a wobbly if a stranger picks them up... You like someone and don't know if you're compatible? Hug them. Trust me... It works... (and saved us a lot of verbal nonsense...)

That is hard to call. Does he do that with other girls? Some people are huggers and other, on demand. It is a safe friendly gesture but could indicate that it is more than just friendly.

If he is the one coming to you. Then the ball is in your court and you have the power. He had no power to friend zone you until you have sex with him. If that is his goal then he could stop talking to you and friend zone you but until he gets what the wants he has no power over you.

I only hug people I like or are interested in. So it might be he just want a hug or to feel if there is a connection when hugging you.
