What does it mean when a guy hugs you?

May be overthinking this.

But my coworker, who I think is cute and have a decent sized crush on, just randomly asked me for a hug today? This wasn’t at work or anything.
We always (kinda) flirt and tease each other, but we both never really touched each other. Until recently he’s begun to touch my shoulder. One of our mutual friends has begun to ask (when crush is around) if I have a crush on him (something that’s never happened before, and I’ve always remained professional).
And today, I was dropping him off and as we were walking and joking and teasing, he randomly stops when we are all alone and holds out his arms for a hug. So we hug and part ways.
This has never happened before? We’ve always been friendly but recently it’s been a little odd? Is this just friendliness? Maybe he might be sad about something? Am I right when I say I’m overthinking?

It means that he was trying to see if you were comfortable touching/being touched by him, and perhaps he was also trying to comfort you a bit if indeed you seemed sad.

It sounds like to me that there is SOME level of interest on his part, but it's too early and not enough evidence to know what KIND of interest.

You must remember that "interest" from men is more often ONLY sexual, but is sometimes also romantic, and the only way to tell the difference is to talk about it and/or to see how he behaves around you. A guy who has romantic feelings will tend to talk about relationships and things you might do together in the future. A guy with only sexual feelings (unless he's a master at it) tends to talk mostly about how good you look, about sex, or tries to get you alone someplace where sex could happen.
