What does it mean when a guy says “you owe me a hug”?

I’m good friends with this one guy and honestly I’m not sure if I want to be more than friends or not but I’m not sure if he’s interested either. He was feeling down so I was trying to help him over text. I really miss him too, so I threw in “I would hug you right now but I can’t”, and he said “you owe me one then”. It’s probably nothing and I’m just overthinking, but that really made me smile and now I know that as soon as quarantines over and I see him at school, I can hug him. But from a guys stand point, what else does it mean? He wants a hug, is there any meaning behind it?

We hugged! I wish it went longer but we met um after not seeing eachother for 5 months and hugged. I’m really glad it happened but to be honest I still don’t think he likes me. Got any ideas of how to tell for sure?

Depends on how honest he is with the things he tells you. Does he mention other girls he's crushing on? Ask you to be his wingman? Or does he seem to be single... If he's single he may just be waiting to be asked out by you or trying to get yo enough nerve to ask you out.

He’s definitely single and says he’s kinda looking around, but he has mentioned one other girl that he’s liked but she rejected him so he’s trying to move on.

No. It's just a hug that you offered and he just kept it in tab to get it later. He probably might even forget that you own him one when you meet again, unless and until the same topic comes back. It's just two friends giving a hug in times of sad.
