Is it unusual to say you’d never leave your partner?

I’ve been with my partner for a few years now and we were talking about a guy he knows who is no good and a really bad influence. He left the mom of his two kids for someone else then got her pregnant and he owes a lot of money.

I told my partner if he started going out with this guy and getting into the same trouble he does that I will just walk away and move on. I have no problem separating myself from toxic situations and especially if I am coming second to some loser. It was a hypothetical thing I just happened to say but my partner took it real serious. He said he would never ever leave me. I told him I would expect him to if I did something really bad and he still said no that he wouldn’t. He clearly meant it too. I kinda thought this was odd. It was like saying, you could do whatever and I’d still be here

To answer your question, my opinion is no it is not unusual to say that you would never leave your partner.

However, this word NEVER should have some exceptions. For eg as you said, doing something unforgivable like cheating, having a toxic controlling behavior or playing constant mind games like " Jealousy card" etc.

In such exceptions one must immediately leave their partner.

Yes, other than these exceptional cases, it is totally right to say you would never leave your partner.

Well, you are totally right to leave if he did something like that. That is called being intelligent and sensible.

Well, honestly your partner is not very intelligent. He is only nice and sweet and this is not a good attitude to have.

Being always nice, sweet is never good. This is almost always backfire. If your partner that even if you did something unforgivable, he will never leave you then it means that he really lack " Self worth" and he is not selfish enough (in good ways).

"He clearly meant it too." He may be telling himself, and you, that he would never leave you, regardless of what you might do, but he can't really know how he would feel until he's in that situation. He may have made that statement, in a quite convincing fashion, to make you feel guilty for your earlier statement.
