Is it okay to have an online boyfriend?

Well, I met this guy on MySpace before we've been friends for more than 6months and were chatting everyday video chat 2-3x a day he's consider as one of my close friends already but then we don't expect that it will happen like this that he likes me and I like him too... Then one day I accept him as my boyfriend but my mom got mad at me because I haven't met that person yet and according to her you can't say you Love the person if you haven't met him something like that, it makes me think and confuse but deep down inside I know I like him and his family knows about me too, his sister chatting with me and sending some messages too..

Here's the thought: Is it bad to fall for someone online?we've seen each other 2-3x a day but through video chat only even if he has work he spent his time for me...Am I fool because I love him? or maybe he's playing around me?but I don't think so he is.sigh want some advice thank you so much :)

i totally agree with what the girl before me wrote whole heartedly but to just expand on that, while yes the internet has allowed us a whole new way of getting to know people, you can totally learn to meet this person and learn to like them and experience the joy of getting to know them but we as humans literally are social animals and make connections to other people physically. believe it or not, there is a big difference between sitting in front of a computer with a camera and sitting across the room (not touching) and talking. just being in the presence of someone makes it real. so that's one point

also, in the "real world" things are also COMPLETELY different. if two years from now you still believe that you're still in love and you decide it's time to take it to the next step and meet and be together for real, odds are your relationship will crash and burn because it is based on something completely different and there's really nothing you can do to change that.

there's nothing wrong with having a flirtation with someone online or having a longterm friendship but having a committed relationship, that's just a bad/naive idea.

I thought I fell in love through an online relationship... but the truth is that love is more than a mental connection. To make it as a couple there has to be a physical connection and you have to determine whether someone is right for you. I'm not talking sex, or anything of the like. I am just saying that you have to have the attractor factor. In the end My 'boyfriend' and I broke up and it hurt as much as a normal relationship but the time I spent could of been used on something more productive.

I would say that it is a difficult and time consuming task. It helps cultivate trust because of how unphysical the relationship is.

On the bad side there are risks, and past that I highly doubt that it will be a lasting relationship, and the emotional pain outweighs the emotional gain in my opinion. I spent a lot of time with my boyfriend, and we are friends to this day, friendship is a much better option rather than a relationship. I would say that you should move on, or see it as a fun fling

hmm, both of you seem to make that relationship works for you. so, why don't you think to arrange time to meet in person? by that you can decide how you really feel about each other. I won't say finding a boyfriend from internet is a wasting of time, but it would be nothing if no action taken. that you have been able to keep communication that often through internet, sounds you both have a good chance to make it real :)

Wow, this is an old thread I missed some how :P but ya, I don't see it as a big deal. If you want to do it and he's fine with it, do it. Not sure if you still feel anything for him or whatever, but ya. Plenty fall in love over the internet and its no big deal. Sadly, my ex and I were mostly online except in the summer cause when I met her I found out she lived in Cali and I in NY. We made it work for about 4 and half or so years so ya. Can work out as long as there's love, loyalty, trust, and communication. Just like any relationship :P

Personally, I don't want another long distance relationship :\ if it comes to it I love someone and just can't not be with them then so be it. I'll do what I have to. But ya...

The anser is no. Especially to the question of saying I love you. You could never say I love you to someone you have never REALLY met. You can probably get to know about 10% of the things required to be in a relationship with someone online. Beyond that, you have nothing to go by.

It is OKAY to have an online boyfriend, I mean you're you. You can do whatever you want and whatever makes you happy, as long as you don't hurt anyone else.

However, can you expect it to last? No. You've never met, you don't know if he's "cheating" on the side, you don't have anything except a virtual connection.
