How do you ask your ex boyfriend to hang out without seeming desperate?

Anonymous
Long story short, I started talking to my ex boyfriend again. We haven't talked in a really long time and we were never really friends like he said we would be. (he broke up with me) We hung out in the same group of friends, so it was quite awkward because we wouldn't really say hi, but we would just comment on whatever the other person once in a while..and never had real conversations between each other. We broke up a long time ago (about a year ago) so I'm definitely quite over the break up and him.

Anyways, I decided to send him an email to catch up. I wrote that we should become good friends again talk about stuff we have been up to. I also brought up some stuff about his favorite band. He replied saying that we should totally hang out some time after his busy sports practice schedule clears up. I was quite shocked because I didn't expect him to ask to hang out, I just said that we should talk and catch up. But I'm happy that he seems to making an effort to be friends too.

So we have been making contact and such now and been talking about activities we've been up to. I really do want to be his friend because I enjoyed just talking to him before we were even together...but I don't want to screw this up by making him think I'm desperate for him again. Sooo...how should I ask him to go on a non-commital friend date? I'm pretty sure he's not busy anymore but I don't want to be the one to ask first...
