The last time that happened to me, he said it was because, "I don't want to risk dating you, then if things don't work out, I lose a friend and girlfriend." Dude, please...
He was attracted enough to me and my personality, yet refused to date me? That ticked me off. Yet he didn't want me dating other guys either and got jealous when I brought up other guys.

So to answer your question, he likes you, just not enough to commit to you unfortunately. That's the simple answer. As to why?

It could be a plethora of reasons: from he's interested in someone else, to he just doesn't feel your girlfriend material (for him; that's nothing against you).

The fact of the matter is, as soon as he friendzoned you, you know where you stand now. Don't waste anymore time on him, or try to convince him he made a mistake and you're worth being with... trust me on the latter; it's a lost cause. Find yourself a guy that does want you.

I don't think guys really "friend zone". That's the wrong schema to use. They prioritize.

Meaning, guys don't really divide girls into categories -- like this girl is nothing more than a friend to me, and this one I want more than friendship. Because that's not really how the male biology works.

Every girl that a guy isn't actively avoiding could be considered for more than friendship, under the right circumstances.

Based on the amount of time he is spending with you, I'd say you are high on the priority list, but that doesn't mean you're at the top. Whatever is above you might not even be another girl. For instance, he might make a stressful career his #1 priority. On the other hand, maybe he's still not over his ex.

You need to figure out where his mind goes when he's not thinking about you.

The other thing is it's possible he has some inhibition for not pushing things forward. Maybe he's afraid that he's actually in your "friend zone". Or maybe he just doesn't feel ready to get into a relationship. Him holding back doesn't mean he friend zoned you. Just means he is worried about something.

1. He is busy focusing on himself and doesn't want a relationship because he founds it toxic.

2. He carries bad experiances/resentment towards women as a whole that he doesn't let show.

3. He doesn't want to feel tied down by his commitment.

Sometimes there's a fine line. If you get too close with someone without things turning romantic I think that can get you friend zoned. It takes a certain type of connection for relationship to work.
