What do girls expect after giving a guy a compliment?

When a girl says to a guy that he looks good or that his personality is great , what is the guy supposed to say? When is that considered flirting and when is it just being friendly?

Girls tend to be very tentative about giving compliments to guys because 1. It might lead the guy to think she wants a relationship with him or to get to know him that way, and 2. Girls hang back and receive far more than they give. They still mostly believe that the guys should do the chasing/initiating.
So yeah, it must be confusing to guys - 'what did that mean?' They receive fewer of them - from everyone.
What should you go about it? Definitely acknowledge it. It's awkward, I know. Sometimes it just feels better to say nothing. But people know it's been said.
Sometimes you can be silent, not give a reaction. But if you do that regularly, the person will stop complimenting. It will seem [though maybe it's not true] that it's not really appreciated.
And one other method is to not say anything about it, specifically, but give a compliment back [could be then, or later.]
The point of compliments is to acknowledge something you like about the person. And deep down, everyone hopes their positive feelings are reciprocated.

I think it’s always a great idea to say “thanks” as it comes of confident and if you want to make it a bit flirty I’d say complimenting her back is a great move! Usually if I’m saying it to a guy I fancy I can’t help but smile and look him up and down a little and call him words like “handsome” or I compliment a specific part of him. if it’s just as a friend I’d be more likely to be generic and just say “you’re looking good!”

They expect you to make the conversation happen as they don't need real social skills cus they're sexually more desired. This is called the resource course in economics. When a country has natural resources, so they neglect to build their industry and infrastructure so when the price of the resources drop or they run out they are cursed. Lottery winners often blow their money too. Even pro athletes so it's not something that only happens to women because they are inferior or something it's just simply what their environment makes them.

Sometimes it seems clear that it is just a compliment. Sometimes it looks like they may be telling me they are interested. So I will look for an opportunity to start up a conversation.

Good question, I’ve had lot girls compliment my eyes over the years. I’ve always felt like they were expecting me to say or do something else besides saying thanking them for the compliment.

I would expect nothing , but be very surprised , women never compliment men , & I get why. Men should never compliment or comment on a woman's appearance , that is ONLY acceptable from other women. Only compliment a good deed and /or positive personality traits.

Can't easily state if it's friendly or more just like that.
And I expect to receive it well and show it.
Takes effort to come out of your way and compliment someone, I wouldn't like to be dismissed just like that.

Nothing at all. If i give a compliment to a guy i just want him to know I think he is handsome or that I like him. But i expect nothing in return and i would not like something like oh you too , it would sound fake giving compliment in return

Once upon a time guys would take anything like that as interest, but nowadays there’s no way. Even if I suspect interest, I’m going to be dismissive until it’s made plain. If a girl compliments me then that’s all it was, just a friendly compliment and I’ll move on with my life. If their intent is to express interest, then I want it signed in triplicate.

I personally don't like saying "thank you" to things I think are lies, BS, or backhanded compliments, so the Asker's question is pretty valid. I just usually give a brief head-nod and change the subject.
