What does it mean "I feel responsible for you." Coming from a guy?!

This guy, well you can say he is my “lover/ friend” ….

but anyways, me and him were talking he was like “you are a star, and I wanna see you when you shine….I want to stay in contact with you always, because I feel like I have to talk to you …hmm I mean I feel responsible for you!”

I said “I can handle myself and I'm a big girl now… “ :P

He said “I know you can…it’s just…..” << And he never finished and then changed the subject…

What does he mean by this?!

hmhh could be wrong but sounds like he was trying to get across that he would be there to protect you and look after you. he knows you can take care of yourself but guys tend to have a sense of duty to protect girls they like its an evelutionary thing I guess.
