I've experienced both. I used to disregard immediate attraction as lust and see what happened over time. Never regretted doing so.

What - beyond the physical form - makes someone attractive to me is ineffable. You can take two women who share a sense of humour, taste in movies, books, habits, etc and I will be attracted to one and on occasion even repulsed by the other. A habit they both have I'll see as "quirky" or "cute" in one but it's a red flag in the other.

You can't quantify what makes the ideal mate.
