Why is it hard to accept compliments from a stranger?

A couple of days ago this guy gave me a compliment on my smile. But it kind of made me depressed and feel upset about it. I am so so looking I'm not beautiful by any means but that's in my eyes. How do you deal with people that compliment you

It’s not hard, I think I’m average looking but I do get complimented often enough, I just smile and say thank you.

I get uncomfortable when anyone complimemts me, so i just mutter a meek thank you and change the topic. Compliments from a stranger dont hold a high place for you because you dont know their feelings or intentions with you

Because you don't know them, so that makes it harder to think think they are being honest.
