Being brave is definitely the best. Unless your worried their friend might become upset by your flirting, just flirt.

If your nervous, and want to only really flirt with the guy privately really, but want to clue him in on that. There is no better want than taking his hand and leading him gently someplace, which presumably his friend will follow him. Its the subtlest way of flirting because, if done quickly and without any thought it looks like your just naturally showing the way (but over time you will always wait to show the guy your flirting with, and when his friend asks, you can just smile and point or let it lead to you interacting with the guy your liking).

Another great flirt, when in mixed company, is when passing out sweets. For the general populus you just hand them out normally, but when its the guy you likes turn you try to pop it in his mouth. If he's clever it will be easy but if it proves messy you can play it off as a little joke. Again its about "over time" experience. The person your interested in getting the little bonuses.

If someone makes a comment you can make one that can be a flirt toward him. You can also position yourself so you’re next to him which can make it easier to be more closely to him and can eventually lean into 1 on 1 conversations.
