A girl randomly texts you in the middle of the day asking if you're looking for a girlfriend. Is it obvious she's asking for herself, or just curious?

Say she's a friend that you occasionally hang out with to share specific, non-intimate hobbies with, but other than that, neither of you tend to text each other much (despite knowing each other for a few years). Then she randomly texts you that question the day after you ask her if she wants to join you when doing your shared hobby.

Typically, women don't approach guys unless they are interested. Furthermore, it is a woman's responsibility to make the first move. That doesn't imply she should ask a guy for a date. It only means she should smile and say "Hi" or something to indicate she is approachable and/or may be receptive to being asked for a date. In this case she is making the first move. Assuming he is receptive, that gives the guy the opportunity to reply, "Yes, I'm looking for a girlfriend; are you available?" In the unlikely event, she is just curious, that reply is less risky of directly being turned down. If she replies in the affirmative, he can safely ask for a date.

It’s not obvious to me. She could be asking for a friend or just be curious in a friendly way. If I were a guy and I were interested in her, I would say “No, I don’t” and then see what she said. If she didn’t say anything else, I might say “Why do you ask?”

I'd assume she is just asking out of curiosity rather than asking me out unless there are other reasons to think that she wants something with me. I've never actually had a woman ask me out so indirectly, so I would generally assume that isn't her intent.

I mean I don't know if you guys have a mutual friend, but if she's being that direct then it could be for herself, but it could also be because she knows someone else who might be interested. I don't think I would ask in that particular way if I were personally intersted in someone, but I might if a friend was really intersted and I wanted to set them up. (But other people might really just be that direct for themselves, kind of depends on the person.)

Nothing is obvious where females are concerned anything can mean something different to what's being said and reality has no definite meaning if they don't want it to be it can change, so I don't assume anything for sure
