Girls, Is it generally not a good idea to try to flirt with a girl in a group fitness class?

I knew a single guy that wanted a girlfriend and he did not flirt that much with the girls in the fitness class but he would smile and speak to the leader with positive sounds and notes of happiness to get attention. Then after the class was over he would say hi and bye to the girls he met in the fitness class while moving around the gym. The fitness class opened up the opportunities for conversation with these girls at the gym who knew him from fitness and were on a conversational basis with him. This does not work with everybody, but it can increase the chances girls will be receptive to a casual discussion with you.
