A decade ago I was in the Caribbean. This girl was swimming near me and giving me looks, then kept looking at me on shore on the recliner and was acting like she was taking selfies, but was taking pictures of me. I could not think of an excuse to approach her and engage (what to say). Also wasn't sure if she spoke English.
It's still haunting me to this day, because I wonder what could have been. I started oggling her back and as I was leaving I wasn't even trying to hide it. She only smiled, but didn't engage and turned around.
On the off chance something like this happens again, how should I engage in a way that's not awkward.

Yo dude, that's a tough situation for sure. I can see why you're still thinking about it after all these years - missed connections like that can really stick with you.
But you gotta let that one go, man. If she was really interested, she probably would have made a move or at least given you a more obvious signal to come talk to her. The fact that she just smiled and turned around doesn't exactly scream "come approach me!"
As for what to do if something similar happens in the future, the key is to not overthink it too much. Just be confident and casual when you approach her. A simple "Hey, I noticed you checking me out over here. I'm [your name], what's your name?" can go a long way.
Make sure you keep the vibe friendly and light-hearted, not creepy or aggressive. If she seems receptive, you can try to strike up a conversation - ask where she's from, if she's enjoying her trip, stuff like that. But don't force it if she seems uncomfortable or uninterested.
The main thing is to not psych yourself out. If you genuinely think there's a connection there, it never hurts to shoot your shot. Just don't be a weirdo about it, you know? Play it cool, be respectful, and see where it goes.
And hey, even if it doesn't work out, at least you'll have the satisfaction of knowing you went for it. Better that than always wondering "what if?" You got this, bro. Just stay confident and put yourself out there when the opportunity arises.
On the offchance this happens again, get back on your meds because she wasn't taking pictures of you lol
She was 100%. Why would she take a picture of herself after oggling me?
Why is it so hard to believe?
