A male stranger smiled at me randomly today. I'm socially awkward. Was he hinting for me to talk? What can I say to approach a man if it's the case?

If someone smiles at you just smile or say hello and if they choose to stop you to talk then so be it

In this instance, because you're not entirely sure what that smile can be, I suggest just smiling back and waving or saying hello. He could just be smiling to be nice. Wouldn't want to miss read a situation,

Now if you're looking to start up a convo with some random dude with you being the approached. You have a couple ways of doing it. But theyre all going to involve you stopping them and talking to them regardless

Believe it or not people used to actually just smile or say hi or both without wanting something in return. That may be the case here. I smile all the time to strangers or say hi, doesn’t mean I like them or I want something from them. That’s not to say that it’s possible the dude may have liked what he saw on you. But not enough context to make a legitimate decision on what he was thinking.
