When kindness becomes flirting: has it ever happened to you to misread a sign?

How many times do we find ourselves decoding every single behavior of others, searching for hidden meanings where perhaps there is nothing at all except simple politeness? In everyday life, the line between a simple friendly attitude and a real romantic interest is often extremely subtle, and it is very easy to make mistakes.

And we see proof of this in the movie He's Just Not That Into You, where it is shown just how easy it is to build entire castles of expectations over an innocent phrase, a small favor, or a misinterpretation of someone else's gestures. In the movie, we continually see scenes where every prolonged glance, every witty joke, or every offered coffee is immediately categorized as proof of an overwhelming interest.

Often we end up bringing this exact same habit into reality, mistaking for flirting what was actually only someone's natural cheerfulness or kind nature. All it takes is a compliment at work or university, a kind message, or a laugh at a joke to spark incredible mental gymnastics, only to realize later that the other person behaved in the exact same way with everyone else.

Moreover, often it is even other people, like friends for instance, who push us into these situations where in the end nothing actually develops, fueling our illusions and convincing us there is something there when there isn't.

Nope. That is a primarily female behavior. Men tend to accept things at face value. Coffee is just coffee and a movie is just a movie; until you use your big girl words and tell me otherwise.
Women add layers that aren’t even there. A man says “Hi!” and either he’s going to propose to her, or he’s going to r*pe her. A man doesn’t say “Hi!” and he doesn’t even know she exists or he hates her guts. Most men simply don’t think that way. Thank god! Half the population being hopelessly neurotic is plenty. Ell oh ell!

Nah. I'm a simple bloke. If people do nice things, I think they are probably nice people.

There are enough beautiful and interesting people in the world to appreciate that I don't find the need to make up fantasy versions of people and imagine intent they may or may not hold.

I probably have had someone flirt with me hundreds of times by now. I tend to block those kinds of interactions out when they are happening.
