Girls, what makes you want to hug a guy?

I noticed I usually have to hug the girl first for them to initiate a hug the next time I see her but it's not always the case. Also I'm 17 and almost done high school.

Today I was on the bus with two of my female friends (chatting them the entire way about 45 mins) when we got off and was time for us to go our separate ways home and they started talking about doing their girl stuff and made plans then they both hugged and I thought "I'm close friends with them now, I've known them for months (almost a year), how is it that we never hugged?" and I just went for it and said jokingly "Oh I see how it is" and made a mimicking arms out hug gesture and put my arms down. Then one of them went "awwwe sorry" and hugged me then I looked at the other (who I actually think I like-like) and she was looking at me and I said "Sorry I don't hug ugly chicks" (I was teasing her about how she looked earlier) she made a squinty I'm gonna get you type look so I stepped up to her and held my arms out with a big grin until she smiled and held out her arms I hugged her and while doing that I said "you know I'm joking, you look fine" (I said it like "fine" not like "fiiiine" as in not in a flirty way) anyways we all said bye and went our ways. Wonder how Mondays gonna be when I see them.

I know I'm going into lots of detail here lol but just giving you an example

how do you feel it should be?

what kind of hugs do you prefer (what kinda setup as in his hands on your back and yours around his neck and touching chests, side hugs, one arm over shoulder, cheek to cheek etc.)

i like two armed hugs lol not just one over the shoulder or whatever and I've only had one hug that I thought was actually good and it was with a guy that I wrapped my arms around like a normal hug I'm not sure where our arms were but nothing sexual and I just hugged him for like two minutes, totally unplanned it was amazing though

With my friends I always hug them when I'm leaving, Its nice =) usually a quick hug is best unless you really like-like someone then you try and make it a little longer, and believe me; it shows. Good luck with your girl <3 hug her an never let her go <3

When I hug a guy friend, I side hug him but sometimes they get carried away and hug me really tight (those are the best!) but it really depends on what the guy's personality is like. If he's the "cool"/less affectionate kind, then I think about it first and probably only side hug him, but if he's the sensitive or friendly kind then I would feel more comfortable giving him a more closer normal hug. However, unless I already know I'm crushing on him then I'd feel comfortable giving a full hug. :)

that would be one situation ^ but also I sometimes feel like hugging my guy friends if I think they are feeling sad. I am a generally a hugging person. lol but I wouldn't hug a guy unless he hugged me first at least one time in the past... if you know what I mean.

I really think you need to grow up in the situation. Girls don't want guys to be awkward about hugs..nor do we want to initiate hugging or things like that. If you want to hug a girl, do it. But don't be weird about it or over think things like this. Girls hug each other and it barely means anything..its not going to mean much more just because they're hugging a guy. The only hugs I usually prefer are full on hugs with some sort of purpose, not just because I want to say goodbye after school.
