Lets say you're having a bad day and someone compliments you because they want to brighten your day.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Is it being fake?

Sometimes if I see a girl who is upset, I'll want to compliment them to make them feel better or forget about whatever is on their mind.

Girls would you be mad if this happened to you?

Depends on how sincere the compliment is.

I hate it when people just give compliments to kiss ass or because they're just trying to make themselves look charming in your eyes. It's not that they truly feel you _____, it's that they want to be on your good side. So sometimes the compliment is all about trying to make themselves look good in your eyes and I hate that.

I do the same thing at work though lol if there's someone who looks like they're having a bad day, I'll pinpoint something out about them that is unique and try to come up with a compliment they never get by making it sound eloquent. But I never say things I don't mean.

If a guy did that, I wouldn't be mad, but I also wouldn't give it much thought if the compliment was fake. I'd probably just forget about it

I probably wouldn't even realize or care that he complimented me. Being pretty isn't going to solve my problems or make me feel better, unfortunately. Neither is having a nice sweater or pair of earrings. I'd probably say thanks and continue with my misery :p

You could make fun of what ever upset her (depending on what it was). If her boss got on her for something, you could make fun of her boss (or say something mean but funny about her boss). Depending on how well you know her, hugs are always good too. :-) You could say, That mean jerk, do you want me to beat him up for you? Or if she got into an accident, offer her help, and say you will hunt them down and slash their tires.. why is she upset anyway?

I agree with Coleen, jokes work really well, too. Sometimes I just want to be asked what's wrong, even when I don't really want to talk about it, it makes me feel like people care. A simple "Well, if you need to talk to someone don't hesitate to talk to me."

But I do love jokes :p

If a guy compliments me and I'm in a bad mood I'll either think he's lying just to try and cheer me up (if he seems nice) or I'll think he's making fun of me and is trying to make me more upset (if he seems mean).

Either way, I don't receive it well.

Have you ever tried complimenting a girl? they will be happy for like 3 seconds, and totally forget about it. Or they will say: "Ugh! I don't look pretty today! I'm so ugly! I didn't even put my makeup on!".

Also you look like a creep doing it:

Girl complimenting a girl: "OMG Stacy! Thank you! I think your shirt looks cute too! :D"

Guy complimenting a girl: "You like my shirt?!?! EW! WTF you Perv!"

Compliments are nice, but making me laugh is even better. You should find ways to make women laugh. That is best.

That you will have to figure out and (as silly as it seems) practice it. Find more than one way to make someone laugh. Use them when the time is right. Just making funny remarks about something around the two of you could make her laugh -- you will have to figure that out..

regardless of how attractive the guy is, it makes me feel a whole lot better, as long as it doesn't seem fake, weather it's the hottest guy in the world, or the ugliest guy in the world, when someone tells me I'm beautiful, it makes my whole day.

I'd just look at him blankly. Honestly, if I'm having a bad day, I just want to fester in it. Which is weird, but I'm likely to snap at anyone who comes and tries to make me feel better. Just leave me and my cranky self alone for a bit.
