When a guy hints at a date but doesn't actually ask?!

Ok so I met this guy through a friend, I went along to see him on sat night when he was dj-ing and we hung out for a while after..we mentioned going out for dinner (steak to b precise) anyway he texts the next day saying he had a good night with me etc..then he text me again the next day. few texts went bk and forth..I wa shoping he would ask to see me in one of those texts but he didnt...I ended the convo with 'off to bed now night night sleep well', he then texts bk with 'Lets go for that steak sooooon. night'

now, what is all this 'soon' business about...why isn't he just coming right out and asking 'when are we going out'. It's strange as I don't know what to make of that! The 'soon' bit just makes me feel like I'm just an option right now and he's not that eager to see me? Or am I being silly and should just wait it out. thank you for your answers, its appreciated. Obv you can tell I like him.

He's waiting for you to reciprocate some sort of approval.

He keeps dropping hints about a date and most likely you don't seem very enthused. He's expecting you to say something like, "yeah that sounds awesome, let me know when you want to go". He's avoiding the old "want to grab dinner on Saturday?", "Oh sorry, I can't, I'm busy".

Either that or he's simply expecting you to pick the day. He's suggested the date idea, and is assuming that if you were willing to go you would offer up a suggested day. Something like "Hey we should go out to dinner sometime", "Yeah that would be awesome, what about this weekend?".

Like many guys, he's taking one step at a time and seeing if you take an equal step right back towards him to meet him halfway, as opposed to jumping in full throttle and risking looking like an idiot if he gets rejected. Basically he's testing the waters and gauging your reaction which so far probably has been as enthusiastic as you think. You have to remember, men are human to. We have insecurities, we need to feel like you are just as interested. A guy isn't going to chase around a girl who doesn't seem interested so if you want a guy to continue to pursue you, you have to reciprocate to give him the green light and let him know its OK to continue to proceed.

It is not that you are just an option, he just tried to ask you out in a "not too forward" way. Keep talking to him and he will eventually ask it directly, talk about the place and date. He probably wanted to make sure that you said yea sure lets do it someday. Then with that in hand, he is sure you would like to hang out someday and he will plan to ask you out someday. Thar "soon" was just to make sure you would like to, not about you being an option.
