Really messed up first date! need help with second i beg of you!

So I've been really antsy about this first date...well. Cause it was my first date! I have liked this girl for a year now and I finally got the balls to ask her out. Went to lunch yesterday and we walked across the street to get lunch. We talked about her classes and how things have been and all that. But, things sometimes got awkward. She is a really popular and social girl and I'm...well not. I'm actually more of an athletic geek... And it definitely showed. I wasn't completely up to date with a lot of the fashions and social media. And there were lulls of awkward moments as we sat across from each other and ate. But I still did dencetly I suppose, I did all things that guys are supposed to do on dates. I opened doors for her, had manners, didn't answer my phone, and maintained eye contact. But I'm pretty sure that wasn't good enough. My friend talked to her later about it and she told him that she found it "quite awkward." JUST...GREAT! Now I'm sitting here thinking how much of an idiot I am and wishing I could've redone all of it! So I'm asking you guys, PLEASE! What can I say this time! What can I do differently? What did I do wrong? I think I need to ask less questions about school, more questions about what she likes to do. *BTW-I wasn't drilling her with questions. I let her talk and ask questions herself too. It's just that those questions I asked didn't really appeal to her I guess :(* So now I REALLY DON'T WANT TO MESS UP THE SECOND ONE, if I even get one with her that is. Because I really want to prove to her that I'm a good guy and that I really do love her. Thanks a bunch all!

Sure enough. You were very very right... She um, she told one of my friends to tell me that she doesn't like me. Umm, yeah, that really hurt. And I know you guys were saying, that I shouldn't change myself for this 'popular chick' and to 'stop worrying'. But this wasn't merely some 'puppy love' as many recall. It may sound very far fetched, especially for high school. But I really loved this girl, and I would've done anything for her. I guess that I just don't deserve her though. Thks all

First of all... DONT TELL HER THAT YOU LOVE HER. that would be bad. You don't even know her well and she is going to freak.

Second of all.. well done for asking her out! and I am sorry it didn't go quite as you wanted it to... but hey sometimes it happens... Your an athlete... those days happens, it is how you work though it that matters.

Third... ask her out on a date where the two of you are doing something. (Not the movies, but something where you have the activity to help buffer the conversation, where you can have a little fun and not be quite so serious. You can even acknowledge to her when you ask her out, that you are pretty sure that she thought it was awkward because it was. Just fess up that she is very lovely and made you a little nervous and you would really like a "redo" at X if she would.

Heads up man... it will turn out alright in the end...

i would not say you didn't deserve her. I would just say you weren't meant for each other. Its alright... there are plenty of fish in the sea as they say.

Hate to burst your bubble but I doubt there will be a second date. When a girl says a date was awkward 9 times out of 10 she won't be wanting a second. Honestly, why change who you are for some popular chick? Why not just stop worrying about it and fund a girl who has the same interests and cam connect with you.

Just because you didn't win her over doesn't mean you don't "deserve" her. You guys just aren't compatible. And you don't love her, you lust for her (not in a sexual sense, you just want her as your own). Love is something that is built upon and created with time after getting to know a person real well. There's no such thing as love at first sight, it's always lust. Just pick yourself up and move forward. There's a girl whose right for you. Rejection sucks but it's part of life.
