We both give each other mixed signals?

it happened around August I got close to a guy that's 2 years younger than me but that's nothing new to me. we knew each other before but we didn't get to know each other until the end of summer. he was the one who asked for my number first but I texted first he straight up told me that he likes the way I look and asked a bunch of questions regarding my relationship status, now I was flattered but I didn't know him too well, however I thought he was also cute. I just got off a relationship with another guy not too long ago. whenever I see him he had no problem approaching me and sitting next to me, talking to me, openly flirt with me, other people were starting to notice. later that month he randomly asked me if I like anyone from our school. I mentioned that I just off a relationship but I was still recovering at the time so I said "i don't think so why? " the next morning re responds "i think I like this girl ally (not me) in our class I think I'm gonna ask her out next week." confused I told him "im a girl why would ask me this? and what's up with the first question?" he responds "idk just because" he approaches me later that say seeming to be awkward and nervous but still sat next to me but he left without saying bye. over the weekend he liked a new picture of me on Facebook and sent me two message the first one was "wanna go eat somewhere?" the second one was "oh nvm its not me I like someone else" next week approaches and he never asked her out and later that night he asked me if I still wanted to go out" I told him I honestly don't know what if you change your mind. we didn't talk for a week but lots of eye contact , so I decided to tell him I might be ready to be interested ( I never told him about the guy I just ended a relationship months prior) to have him say "i don't know its hard to see someone at the moment" I didn't take this personally and said "i'm cool with it" thinking we both would be okay he says "thats good you're okay with it but I'm not" he became really moody and distant and after a month we started talking again but we Haven't dare to text each other and there's this really cocky confident guy whose my age flirts with me in front of him however this cocky guy reminds me of my ex lol. back to this guy I'm becoming interested in, he seems nervous around me like he will stand near but look to the ground then approach me and screw up on his test when I'm close by. seems like we both give mixed signals? I was flattered by his confidence at first but now he's nervous and awkward around me?

he sometimes appears distant but is very attentive like I've caught him him staring at me sometimes he looks away or he will just look in my eye. one time I was talking to the guy next to me while he was in front of me he turns around to look at me I said hi he doesn't say anything but make a gasp then turns around.
