Why was my boyfriend crying when he broke up with me and does he still really like me?

My boyfriend of 9 months broke up with me. He wanted to in person, but I told him I rather he talk about it over the phone. Long story short I knew he was going to break up with me so I asked him and so that's when I rather talk about it over the phone. So we did and he was crying and talking mostly about how he felt it wasn't fair to me because his feelings have changed since we first started going out in the summer and how the whole long distance thing was hard for both of us. He mentioned that he felt maybe he didn't put enough effort in so it was his fault, and in the middle he started crying a little bit and trying to get through talking. At the end he was like you never know what could happen down the road (as if maybe some day well be together again) and then he asked something about maybe we can play tennis if you want just as friends eventually sometime. It sounds to me like he still likes me and is only letting me go because its long distance. It doesn't make any sense. Am I right about this that he still want to be with me its just the long distance thing is hard.
